Journal ArticleDOI

Low prevalence of methicillin-resistant strains among Staphylococcus aureus colonizing young and healthy members of the community in Portugal.

TL;DR: The carriage rate of MRSA in healthy and young individuals remains low, and five of the seven MRSA were identified as belonging to one of three highly epidemic clones, the Brazilian, Iberian, and Pediatric clones of MR SA, which was identified as endemic in Portuguese hospitals.
Journal ArticleDOI

Genetic Diversity and Clonal Patterns among Antibiotic-Susceptible and -Resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae Colonizing Children: Day Care Centers as Autonomous Epidemiological Units

TL;DR: In this paper, the antibiotype of the 1,096 Streptococcus pneumoniae recovered from 2,111 nasopharyngeal samples of children attending 16 day care centers (DCCs) in Lisbon, Portugal, and molecular typing of 413 drug-resistant pneumococci (DRPn) and 89 fully drug-susceptible pneumoniae (DSPn) has allowed several conclusions.
Journal ArticleDOI

Comparison of DNA Sequencing of the Protein A Gene Polymorphic Region with Other Molecular Typing Techniques for Typing Two Epidemiologically Diverse Collections of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus

TL;DR: The results showed that the lineages most recently introduced in the hospital setting showed little variability in spaAtypes, whereas the MRSA clones circulating for a longer period of time and spread among several hospitals showed a higher degree of variability.
