Journal ArticleDOI
Forest fires and deforestation in the central Amazon: Effects of landscape and climate on spatial and temporal dynamics.
Mateus dos Reis,Paulo Maurício Lima de Alencastro Graça,Aurora Miho Yanai,Camila Julia Pacheco Ramos,Philip M. Fearnside +4 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors assessed the potential drivers of deforestation and forest fires in the central Brazilian Amazon and show that over a period of 31 years (1985-2015) forest fires occurred only in years of extreme drought induced by El Nino (1997, 2009 and 2015).
Journal ArticleDOI
Deforestation Dynamics on an Amazonian Peri-Urban Frontier: Simulating the Influence of the Rio Negro Bridge in Manaus, Brazil
TL;DR: Peri-urbanization in the Bridge scenario demonstrates the possible increase in the spatial distribution of deforestation activity beyond the already-consolidated frontier, making the deforestation pattern more diffuse and leaving the remaining forest even more vulnerable.
Journal ArticleDOI
Amazon deforestation and urban expansion: Simulating future growth in the Manaus Metropolitan Region, Brazil.
Y. Santos,Aurora Miho Yanai,Camila Julia Pacheco Ramos,Paulo Maurício Lima de Alencastro Graça,José Augusto Paixão Veiga,Francis Wagner Silva Correia,Philip M. Fearnside +6 more
TL;DR: In this article , the authors show that the size of simulated urban patches increases in areas with a higher deforestation and near the roads, and that protected areas are important to contain deforestation and urban expansion in the Amazon.
