Linear and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Photochromic Molecules and Materials.

The ability of nonlinear optical materials to transmit, process and store information forms the basis of emerging optoelectronic and photonic technologies. Organic chromophore-containing polymers, in which the refractive index can be controlled by light or an electric field, are expected to play an important role.

Design and synthesis of chromophores and polymers for electro-optic and photorefractive applications

An internal or external electric field F can drive the chemical structure, bond order alternation, and electronic structure of linear polymethine dyes from a neutral, bond-alternated, polyene-like structure, through a cyanine-like structure, and ultimately to a zwitterionic (charge-separated) bond-alternated structure. As the structure evolves under the influence of F, the linear polarizability α, the first hyperpolarizability β, and the second hyperpolarizability γ are seen to be derivatives, with respect to F, of their next lower order polarization (for α) or polarizability (for β and γ). These derivative relations provide a unified picture of the dependence of the polarizability and hyperpolarizabilities on the structure in linear polymethine dyes. In addition, they allow for predictions of structure-property relations of higher order hyperpolarizabilities.

Stable polymeric materials for nonlinear optics: a review based on azobenzene systems

Greatly enhanced second-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities in donor-acceptor organic molecules

A simplified three-level model for γ, the molecular third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility, is presented and discussed. The perturbation theory-based approach suggests that there are three primary avenues to optimizing molecular four-wave mixing susceptibilities and that with each of these is associated a particular class of molecular electronic structures. The three electronic structure classes consist of (1) conjugated donor–acceptor dipolar molecules with a large secondorder susceptibility, β; (2) even-member conjugated chains such as -enes, -ynes, and ene–ynes with large two-photon dominated susceptibilities; and (3) “charged” odd-member conjugated chaines with large linear absorption dominated third-order susceptibilities such as squaryliums (perhaps, more generally, the polymethine dyes). Classes (1) and (2) have been known and investigated in the past, while recent results of ours suggest the existence of the third and perhaps final class.

The contribution of π electrons to second harmonic generation in organic molecules

We report on the successful demonstration of a single-mode polymer-optical fiber with an 8-µm-diameter nonlinear-optical core composed of a dye-chromophore-doped polymer. Both solid-solution cores and copolymer cores were successfully fabricated. Using an imaging system, we show that the far-field transverse light pattern is that of a single-mode guide. We find that the loss at 1064 nm for the single-mode fiber is approximately 0.2 dB/cm and that it preserves polarization to better than 99.8%/cm.
