An association study of bipolar mood disorder (type I) with the 5-HTTLPR serotonin transporter polymorphism in a human population isolate from Colombia
Jorge Ospina-Duque,Constanza Duque,Luis G. Carvajal-Carmona,Daniel Ortiz-Barrientos,Iván Soto,Nicolás Pineda,M. Cuartas,Jorge Calle,Carlos López,L Ochoa,Jenny García,Juliana Andrea Soto Gómez,Angela Agudelo,Maria Lozano,Gabriel Montoya,Angelica Ospina,María Stella Girón López,Aurora Gallo,Ana Miranda,Lina María López Serna,Patricia Montoya,Carlos Palacio,Gabriel Bedoya,Mark I. McCarthy,Victor I. Reus,Nelson B. Freimer,Andres Ruiz-Linares,Andres Ruiz-Linares +27 more
TL;DR: Evaluating the etiologic/modifier role of the short variant of a functional length polymorphism in the promoter region of the serotonin transporter in a case / control sample for bipolar mood disorder collected from an isolated South American population found an excess was seen in younger cases and in cases with psychotic symptoms.
Journal ArticleDOI
Lithium treatment effects on the neuropsychological functioning of patients with bipolar I disorder.
Carlos López-Jaramillo,Juan Lopera-Vásquez,Jorge Ospina-Duque,Jenny García,Aurora Gallo,Vladimir Cortez,Carlos Palacio,Carla Torrent,Anabel Martínez-Arán,Eduard Vieta +9 more
TL;DR: No significant cognitive performance differences were found between the two groups of patients with bipolar disorder, suggesting that lithium therapy had no deleterious effects on cognition, and bipolar I patients have verbal memory deficits that are not explained by medication or by lithium monotherapy, but by the condition itself.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of Urbanization on the Temperature Inversion Breakup in a Mountain Valley with Implications for Air Quality
TL;DR: In this article, it is shown that in a mountain valley subject to temperature inversions, urbanization can have an important influence on air quality through effects on the inversion breakup.
Journal ArticleDOI

Convergent linkage evidence from two Latin-American population isolates supports the presence of a susceptibility locus for bipolar disorder in 5q31–34
Ibi Herzberg,Anna J. Jasinska,Jenny García,Damini Jawaheer,Barbara Kremeyer,Constanza Duque,María Victoria Parra,Jorge Vega,Daniel Ortiz,L. Carvajal,Guadalupe Polanco,Gabriel J. Restrepo,Carlos López,Carlos Palacio,Matthew Levinson,Ileana Aldana,Carol A. Freimer,Nelson B. Freimer,Andrés Ruiz-Linares,Andrés Ruiz-Linares +32 more
TL;DR: A follow-up study with additional markers was undertaken in an expanded set of Colombian and Costa Rican families; this provided a genome-wide significant evidence of linkage of BPI to a candidate region of approximately 10 cM in 5q31-33 (maximum non-parametric linkage score=4.395, P<0.00004).
