IFNγ Response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Risk of Infection and Disease in Household Contacts of Tuberculosis Patients in Colombia
Helena del Corral,Sara C. París,Nancy D. Marin,Diana Marín,Lucelly López,Hanna Marisol Henao,Teresita Martínez,Liliana Villa,Luis F. Barrera,Blanca L. Ortiz,María Elena Heras–Ramírez,Carlos Montes,María C. Oquendo,Lisandra M. Arango,Felipe Riaño,Carlos Aguirre,Alberto Bustamante,John T. Belisle,Karen M. Dobos,Gloria Isabel Mejía,M.R. Giraldo,Patrick J. Brennan,Jaime Robledo,María Patricia Arbeláez,Carlos del Valle Rojas,Luis F. García +25 more
TL;DR: The high tuberculosis incidence amongst children supports administration of chemoprohylaxis to child contacts regardless of BCG vaccination and a significant trend for tuberculosis development amongst high HHC IFNγ producers was observed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Failure of a killed Leishmania amazonensis vaccine against American cutaneous leishmaniasis in Colombia.
Iván D. Vélez,Katherine Gilchrist,María Patricia Arbeláez,Carlos del Valle Rojas,Juan Alberto Puerta,Carlos Antunes,Fabio Zicker,Farrokh Modabber +7 more
TL;DR: The vaccine was shown to be safe but offered no protection against CL caused by L. panamensis in the proposed vaccination schedule.
Journal ArticleDOI
Tuberculosis control and managed competition in Colombia.
María Patricia Arbeláez,Marta Beatriz Gaviria,Álvaro Franco,Román Restrepo,Doracelly Hincapié,Erik Blas +5 more
TL;DR: Recommendations are to restructure the reform's public health component, strengthen the technical capacity in public health of the state, mainly at the local and departmental levels, and to improve the health information system by reorienting its objectives to public health goals.
Journal ArticleDOI
BCG vaccine effectiveness in preventing tuberculosis and its interaction with human immunodeficiency virus infection
TL;DR: BCG has a modest protective effect against all forms of TB independent of HIV status, and BCG confers protection against extrapulmonary TB among HIV-negative individuals, however, HIV infection seems to abrogate the protective effect of BCG against extrapULmonary TB.
Journal ArticleDOI
Safety and immunogenicity of a killed Leishmania (L.) amazonensis vaccine against cutaneous leishmaniasis in Colombia: a randomized controlled trial
Iván D. Vélez,Sonia Agudelo,María Patricia Arbeláez,Katherine Gilchrist,Sara M. Robledo,Juan Alberto Puerta,Fabio Zicker,Judith Berman,Farrokh Modabber +8 more
TL;DR: The good safety profile and evidence of Th1 immune reactions due to i.m. vaccination in this phase-I/II study suggest that a population-based phase-III efficacy trial of the i.M. vaccine should be initiated.
