Deep-Sea Biodiversity in the Mediterranean Sea: The Known, the Unknown, and the Unknowable
Roberto Danovaro,Cinzia Corinaldesi,Gianfranco D'Onghia,Bella S. Galil,Cristina Gambi,Andrew J. Gooday,Nikolaos Lampadariou,Gian Marco Luna,Caterina Morigi,Karine Olu,Paraskevi N. Polymenakou,Eva Ramirez-Llodra,Anna Sabbatini,Francesc Sardà,Myriam Sibuet,Anastasios Tselepides +15 more
TL;DR: It is shown that in contrast to what was expected from the sharp decrease in organic carbon fluxes and reduced faunal abundance, the deep-sea biodiversity of both the eastern and the western basins of the Mediterranean Sea is similarly high.
Journal ArticleDOI
Benthic foraminiferal faunas in surface sediments off nw africa: relationship with organic flux to the ocean floor
TL;DR: In this paper, the results were compared with estimated values of the downward organic flux and measured bottom water oxygen concentrations, and it was suggested that this relationship can be used on a local scale as a proxy for paleo-export production.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mid-late Pleistocene glacimarine sedimentary processes of a high-latitude, deep-sea sediment drift (Antarctic Peninsula Pacific margin)
Renata G. Lucchi,Michele Rebesco,Angelo Camerlenghi,Martina Busetti,L. Tomadin,Giuliana Villa,Davide Persico,Caterina Morigi,M.C. Bonci,Giovanna Giorgetti +9 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of glaciation on sediment drifts are recognized from marked sedimentary facies variation in deep sea cores taken from the continental rise of the Antarctic Peninsula Pacific margin.
Journal ArticleDOI
Paleoenvironmental evolution of the eastern Mediterranean during the Messinian: Constraints from integrated microfossil data of the Pissouri Basin (Cyprus)
Tanja Kouwenhoven,Caterina Morigi,Alessandra Negri,Simona Giunta,Wout Krijgsman,Jean Marie Rouchy +5 more
TL;DR: In this article, the Pissouri Motorway section on Cyprus was used to reconstruct surface and bottom-water paleoenvironments of the eastern Mediterranean during the interval preceding the Messinian salinity crisis (MSC).
Journal ArticleDOI
Developing Foram-AMBI for biomonitoring in the Mediterranean: Species assignments to ecological categories
Frans Jorissen,Maria Pia Nardelli,Ahuva Almogi-Labin,Christine Barras,Luisa Bergamin,Erica Bicchi,Erica Bicchi,Akram El Kateb,Luciana Ferraro,Mary McGann,Caterina Morigi,Caterina Morigi,Elena Romano,Anna Sabbatini,Magali Schweizer,Silvia Spezzaferri +15 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyse the distribution patterns of benthic foraminifera in the Mediterranean as a function of organic carbon gradients on the basis of 15 publications and assign individual species to five ecological categories.
