Organic–inorganic hybrid materials do not represent only a creative alternative to design new materials and compounds for academic research, but their improved or unusual features allow the development of innovative industrial applications. Nowadays, most of the hybrid materials that have already entered the market are synthesised and processed by using conventional soft chemistry based routes developed in the eighties. These processes are based on: a) the copolymerisation of functional organosilanes, macromonomers, and metal alkoxides, b) the encapsulation of organic components within sol–gel derived silica or metallic oxides, c) the organic functionalisation of nanofillers, nanoclays or other compounds with lamellar structures, etc. The chemical strategies (self-assembly, nanobuilding block approaches, hybrid MOF (Metal Organic Frameworks), integrative synthesis, coupled processes, bio-inspired strategies, etc.) offered nowadays by academic research allow, through an intelligent tuned coding, the development of a new vectorial chemistry, able to direct the assembling of a large variety of structurally well defined nano-objects into complex hybrid architectures hierarchically organised in terms of structure and functions. Looking to the future, there is no doubt that these new generations of hybrid materials, born from the very fruitful activities in this research field, will open a land of promising applications in many areas: optics, electronics, ionics, mechanics, energy, environment, biology, medicine for example as membranes and separation devices, functional smart coatings, fuel and solar cells, catalysts, sensors, etc.

In recent years there has been immense interest in studying gels derived from low molecular mass gelators (supramolecular, or simply molecular gels). The motivation for this is not only to understand the fundamental aggregate structures in the gels at different length scales, but also to explore their potential for futuristic technological applications. Gels have been made sensitive to external stimuli like light and chemical entities by incorporating a spectroscopically active or a receptor unit as part of the gelator molecule. This makes them suitable for applications such as sensing and actuating. The diversity of gel structural architectures has allowed them to be utilized as templates to prepare novel inorganic superstructures for possible applications in catalysis and separation. Gels derived from liquid crystals (anisotropy gels) that can act as dynamically functional materials have been prepared, for example, for (re-writable) information recording. Supramolecular gels can be important in controlled release applications, in oil recovery, for gelling cryogenic fuels etc. They can also serve as media for a range of applications. This tutorial review highlights some of the instructive work done by various groups to develop smart and functional gels, and covers a wide spectrum of scientific interest ranging from medicine to materials science.

A better understanding of the self-structuration of bridged silsesquioxanes

A new approach for the morphological control of bridged silsesquioxanes has been achieved by the hydrolysis of silylated organic molecules bearing urea groups. The urea groups are responsible for the auto-association of the molecules through intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions. The self-assembly leads to supramolecular architectures that have the ability to direct the organization of hybrid silicas under controlled hydrolysis. The hydrolysis of the chiral diureido derivatives of trans-(1,2)-diaminocyclohexane 1 under basic conditions has been examined. The solid-state NMR spectra ((29)Si and (13)C) showed the hybrid nature of these materials with wholly preserved S-C bond covalent bonds throughout the silicate network. Hybrid silicas with hollow tubular morphologies were obtained by the hydrolysis of the enantiomerically pure compounds, (R,R)-1 or (S,S)-1, whereas the corresponding racemic mixture, rac-1, led to a hybrid with ball-like structures. The tubular shape is likely to result from a combination of two phenomena: the auto-association abilities and a self-templating structuration of the hybrid materials by the organic crystalline precursor. Electronic microscopy techniques (SEM and TEM) gave evidence for the self-templating pathway. The formation of the ball-like structures occurs through a usual nucleation growth phenomenon owing to a higher solubility of the corresponding crystals in the same medium.

Shape-controlled bridged silsesquioxanes: hollow tubes and spheres.

The synthesis of four bis(trialkoxysilylated) organic molecules capable of self-assembly--(EtO)3Si(CH2)3NHCONH-(CH2)n-NHCONH(CH2)3Si(OEt)3 (n = 9-12)--associating urea functional groups and alkylidene chains of variable length is described. These compounds behave as organogelators, forming supramolecular assemblies thanks to the intermolecular hydrogen bonding of urea groups. Whereas fluoride ion-catalysed hydrolysis in ethanol in the presence of a stoichiometric amount of water produced amorphous hybrids, acid-catalysed hydrolysis in an excess of water gave rise to the formation of crystalline lamellar hybrid materials through a self-organisation process. The structural features of these nanostructured organic/inorganic hybrids were analysed by several techniques: attenuated Fourier transformed infrared (ATR-FTIR), solid-state NMR spectroscopy (13C and 29Si), scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). The reaction conditions, the hydrophobic properties of the long alkylidene chains and the hydrogen-bonding properties of the urea groups are determining factors in the formation of these self-assembled nanostructured hybrid silicas.
