A four-detector perturbed angular correlation (PAC) spectrometer has been developed with ultra-fast BaF2 detectors to acquire four coincidence spectra simultaneously, two at 180° and two at 90°. This spectrometer has double efficiency compared to that of a three-detector set-up. Higher efficiency is desirable for PAC studies in solid state physics where large number of coincidences are required to obtain the PAC spectra with good statistics and is particularly useful when the half-lives of the parent probe nuclei used for PAC measurements are ∼2–3 days or less as in 111In (2.8 d), 99Mo (2.7 d) and 140La (1.7 d). The performance of the spectrometer has been tested for the HfO2 monoclinic crystal in the temperature range from 77 to 873 K and for the HfF4·3H2O crystal at room temperature. The polycrystalline HfO2 has been synthesized from Hf metal by heating in air. The hydrated hafnium fluoride has been crystallized by dissolving Hf metal in 40% HF and drying slowly at room temperature.

A perturbed angular correlation spectrometer for material science studies

The Clover detectors in their addback mode are excellent tools for detecting high-energy gamma rays (⩾2 MeV ) . The characteristics of these detectors, at energies above 2 MeV , are usually determined from simulation data or from extrapolation of the empirical data. This is the first time that the characteristics of a Compton suppressed Clover germanium detector have been studied up to 5 MeV using a radioactive 66 Ga (T 1/2 =9.41 h ) source.

Characteristics of a Compton suppressed Clover detector up to 5 MeV

From temperature dependent perturbed angular correlation (PAC) measurements (77–873 K) in equiatomic TiNi intermetallic alloy, martensitic phase transformations have been observed. Three frequency components corresponding to three different phases of TiNi have been found in the temperature range 298–873 K. The results of quadrupole frequency and asymmetry parameters at room temperature are found to be: ωQ = 14(1) Mrad/s, η = 0 (33%), ωQ = 40.0(5) Mrad/s, η = 0.66(3) (52%) and ωQ = 56.7(3)Mrad/s, η = 0.39(2) (15%). The frequency component with η = 0 and which enhances to ~52% at 373 K can be attributed to the cubic austenite phase. The predominant component (~52%) found at room temperature has been attributed to monoclinic martensitic phase of TiNi and the third component with values of ωQ and η similar to those for the martensitic phase is attributed to the intermediate orthorhombic phase. At 77 K, no intermediate and austenite phases have been found but only the martensite phase is observed at this temperature. From XRD measurements at room temperature also, three phases of TiNi have been observed.

Martensitic phase transformation in TiNi.

The performances of YAG(Ce) and CsI(Tl) scintillators have been compared using photomultiplier tube (PMT) readout for γ rays and α particles. It is found that the energy resolution of YAG(Ce) is inferior to that of CsI(Tl). With Philips XP2971 PMT, we have obtained improved energy and time resolution for YAG(Ce), compared to the same, obtained by earlier workers using XP2020/Q. The best values of energy resolution (FWHM), obtained in the present work, for 662 keV γ ray, are 6% and 7%, respectively, for CsI(Tl) and YAG(Ce), whereas for 5.48 MeV α particles, the observed values are 6% and 8.4%, respectively. The pulse height response of both the scintillators has been found to be reasonably linear up to 1.3 MeV γ energy. A prompt time resolution of 1.3 ns (FWHM) has been obtained with a BaF 2 – YAG(Ce) combination against 511– 511 keV photopeak selection, which compares well with that obtained for a BaF 2 –CsI(Tl) combination, used by us.
