Interventions to improve antibiotic prescribing practices for hospital inpatients
Peter Davey,Charis Marwick,Claire Scott,Esmita Charani,Kirsty McNeil,Erwin M. Brown,Ian M. Gould,Craig R Ramsay,Susan Michie +8 more
TL;DR: This systematic review of interventions to improve antibiotic prescribing to hospital inpatients showed interventions to be associated with improvement in prescribing according to antibiotic policy in routine clinical practice, with 70% of interventions being hospital-wide compared with 31% for RCTs.
Journal ArticleDOI
interventions to improve antibiotic prescribing practices for hospital inpatients (updated protocol)
Peter Davey,Claire Scott,Erwin M. Brown,Esmita Charani,Susan Michie,Craig R Ramsay,Charis Marwick +6 more
TL;DR: The results show that interventions to improve antibiotic prescribing to hospital inpatients are successful, and can reduce antimicrobial resistance or hospital acquired infections.
Journal ArticleDOI
The health and economic burden of bloodstream infections caused by antimicrobial-susceptible and non-susceptible Enterobacteriaceae and Staphylococcus aureus in European hospitals, 2010 and 2011: A multicentre retrospective cohort study
Andrew J. Stewardson,Arthur Allignol,Jan Beyersmann,Nicholas Graves,Martin Schumacher,Rodolphe Meyer,Evelina Tacconelli,Giulia De Angelis,Claudio Farina,Fabio Pezzoli,Xavier Bertrand,Houssein Gbaguidi-Haore,Jonathan D. Edgeworth,Olga Tosas,José Antonio Martínez,M Pilar Ayala-Blanco,Angelo Pan,Alessia Zoncada,Charis Marwick,Dilip Nathwani,Harald Seifert,Nina Judith Hos,Stefan Hagel,Mathias W. Pletz,Stéphan Juergen Harbarth +24 more
TL;DR: While BSI with S. aureus had greater impact on mortality, excess LOS and cost than Enterobacteriaceae per infection, the impact of antimicrobial resistance was greater for Enterobacteriaiaceae.
Journal ArticleDOI
Appropriate vs. inappropriate antimicrobial therapy.
Peter Davey,Charis Marwick +1 more
TL;DR: While inappropriate therapy undoubtedly has an important influence on outcomes, it needs to be considered in the context of other patient risk-factors, such as co-morbid conditions, severity score measures, and functional status, when assessing the impact of inappropriate therapy on outcomes such as length of hospital stay.
Journal ArticleDOI
Risk of postoperative acute kidney injury in patients undergoing orthopaedic surgery—development and validation of a risk score and effect of acute kidney injury on survival: observational cohort study
Samira Bell,Friedo W. Dekker,Thenmalar Vadiveloo,Charis Marwick,Harshal Deshmukh,Peter T. Donnan,Merel van Diepen +6 more
TL;DR: A preoperative risk prediction model consisting of seven predictors for acute kidney injury was developed, with good predictive performance in patients undergoing orthopaedic surgery, and survival was significantly poorer in patients even with mild (stage 1) postoperative acute kidneys injury.
