Planning algorithms are impacting technical disciplines and industries around the world, including robotics, computer-aided design, manufacturing, computer graphics, aerospace applications, drug design, and protein folding. This coherent and comprehensive book unifies material from several sources, including robotics, control theory, artificial intelligence, and algorithms. The treatment is centered on robot motion planning but integrates material on planning in discrete spaces. A major part of the book is devoted to planning under uncertainty, including decision theory, Markov decision processes, and information spaces, which are the “configuration spaces” of all sensor-based planning problems. The last part of the book delves into planning under differential constraints that arise when automating the motions of virtually any mechanical system. Developed from courses taught by the author, the book is intended for students, engineers, and researchers in robotics, artificial intelligence, and control theory as well as computer graphics, algorithms, and computational biology.

Planning Algorithms: Introductory Material

Computational geometry is concerned with the design and analysis of algorithms for geometrical problems. In addition, other more practically oriented, areas of computer science— such as computer graphics, computer-aided design, robotics, pattern recognition, and operations research—give rise to problems that inherently are geometrical. This is one reason computational geometry has attracted enormous research interest in the past decade and is a well-established area today. (For standard sources, we refer to the survey article by Lee and Preparata [19841 and to the textbooks by Preparata and Shames [1985] and Edelsbrunner [1987bl.) Readers familiar with the literature of computational geometry will have noticed, especially in the last few years, an increasing interest in a geometrical construct called the Voronoi diagram. Most common database management systems represent information in a simple record-based format. Semantic modeling provides richer data structuring capabilities for database applications. In particular, research in this area has articulated a number of constructs that provide mechanisms for representing structurally complex interrelations among data typically arising in commercial applications. In general terms, semantic modeling complements work on knowledge representation (in artificial intelligence) and on the new generation of database models based on the object-oriented paradigm of programming languages.This paper presents an in-depth discussion of semantic data modeling. It reviews the philosophical motivations of semantic models, including the need for high-level modeling abstractions and the reduction of semantic overloading of data type constructors. It then provides a tutorial introduction to the primary components of semantic models, which are the explicit representation of objects, attributes of and relationships among objects, type constructors for building complex types, ISA relationships, and derived schema components. Next, a survey of the prominent semantic models in the literature is presented. Further, since a broad area of research has developed around semantic modeling, a number of related topics based on these models are discussed, including data languages, graphical interfaces, theoretical investigations, and physical implementation strategies.

Semantic database modeling: survey, applications, and research issues

Random sampling is used for several new geometric algorithms. The algorithms are “Las Vegas,” and their expected bounds are with respect to the random behavior of the algorithms. One algorithm reports all the intersecting pairs of a set of line segments in the plane, and requires O(A + n log n) expected time, where A is the size of the answer, the number of intersecting pairs reported. The algorithm requires O(n) space in the worst case. Another algorithm computes the convex hull of a point set in E3 in O(n log A) expected time, where n is the number of points and A is the number of points on the surface of the hull. A simple Las Vegas algorithm triangulates simple polygons in O(n log log n) expected time. Algorithms for half-space range reporting are also given. In addition, this paper gives asymptotically tight bounds for a combinatorial quantity of interest in discrete and computational geometry, related to halfspace partitions of point sets.

Applications of random sampling in computational geometry, II

LetX be a given set ofn circular and straight line segments in the plane where two segments may interest only at their endpoints. We introduce a new technique that computes the Voronoi diagram ofX inO(n logn) time. This result improves on several previous algorithms for special cases of the problem. The new algorithm is relatively simple, an important factor for the numerous practical applications of the Voronoi diagram.

We present efficient parallel algorithms for several basic problems in computational geometry: convex hulls, Voronoi diagrams, detecting line segment intersections, triangulating simple polygons, minimizing a circumscribing triangle, and recursive data-structures for three-dimensional queries.

The two-dimensional Movers' Problem may be stated as follows: Given a set of polygonal obstacles in the plane, and a two-dimensional robot system B, determine whether one can move B from a given placement to another without touching any obstacle, and plan such a motion when one exists. Efficient algorithms are presented for the two special cases in which B is either a disc or a straightline segment, running respectively in time 0(n log n) and 0(n2 log n). To solve the problem for a disc one uses the planar Voronoi diagram determined by the obstacles; in the case of a line-segment one generalizes the notion of Voronoi diagram to the 3-dimensional configuration space of the moving segment.
