Journal ArticleDOI

Rethinking the term “pi-stacking”

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors review experimental and theoretical literature across several fields and conclude that the terms "pi stacking" and "pi-pi interactions" do not accurately describe the forces that drive association between aromatic molecules of the types most commonly studied in chemistry or biology laboratories.
Journal ArticleDOI

Innovative Chemicals and Materials from Bacterial Aromatic Catabolic Pathways

TL;DR: This work has engineered Pseudomonas putida KT2440 to convert these aromatic compounds to 15 catabolic intermediates that exhibit substantial chemical diversity and produce materials from three compounds to illustrate the potential for realizing performance-advantaged properties relative to petroleum-derived analogs.
Journal ArticleDOI

Renewable Unsaturated Polyesters from Muconic Acid

TL;DR: NMR measurements demonstrate that alkene bonds are present in the polymer backbones, and biologically derived muconic acid is incorporated into polyesters via condensation polymerization using the homologous series of poly(ethylene succinate) and poly(propylene succinate).

Stem, Shoots, and Leaves: Increasing Access of Underrepresented Groups to High-Quality, Career-Readying Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education

TL;DR: The importance of post-secondary STEM education has been highlighted by Carnevale et al. as discussed by the authors, who pointed out that a million more workers with STEM skills than our educational system is on track to prepare will be needed.
