Google Earth Engine: Planetary-scale geospatial analysis for everyone

We present YAGO, a light-weight and extensible ontology with high coverage and quality. YAGO builds on entities and relations and currently contains more than 1 million entities and 5 million facts. This includes the Is-A hierarchy as well as non-taxonomic relations between entities (such as HASONEPRIZE). The facts have been automatically extracted from Wikipedia and unified with WordNet, using a carefully designed combination of rule-based and heuristic methods described in this paper. The resulting knowledge base is a major step beyond WordNet: in quality by adding knowledge about individuals like persons, organizations, products, etc. with their semantic relationships - and in quantity by increasing the number of facts by more than an order of magnitude. Our empirical evaluation of fact correctness shows an accuracy of about 95%. YAGO is based on a logically clean model, which is decidable, extensible, and compatible with RDFS. Finally, we show how YAGO can be further extended by state-of-the-art information extraction techniques.

Social Network Analysis

The objective of this paper is to give a comprehensive introduction to applied cryptography with an engineer or computer scientist in mind. The emphasis is on the knowledge needed to create practical systems which supports integrity, confidentiality, or authenticity. Topics covered includes an introduction to the concepts in cryptography, attacks against cryptographic systems, key use and handling, random bit generation, encryption modes, and message authentication codes. Recommendations on algorithms and further reading is given in the end of the paper. This paper should make the reader able to build, understand and evaluate system descriptions and designs based on the cryptographic components described in the paper.

The present report is submitted in response to General Assembly resolution 61/106, by which the Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Optional Protocol thereto. As requested by the Assembly, a brief overview of the status of the Convention as at 3 August 2007 is presented. The report also contains a brief description of technical arrangements on staff and facilities made necessary for the effective performance of the functions of the Conference of States Parties and the Committee under the Convention and the Optional Protocol, and a description on the progressive implementation of standards and guidelines for the accessibility of facilities and services of the United Nations system. Recent efforts of the United Nations and agencies to disseminate information on the Convention and the Optional Protocol are also described.

An Efficient and Versatile Query Engine for TopX Search

Congestion is a major problem in many cities. In order to monitor and manage traffic, a number of different sensor types are used to collect traffic data. This includes GPS devices in the vehicles themselves as well as fixed Bluetooth sensors along the roads. Each sensor type has advantages and disadvantages. Where GPS has a wide coverage of the road network, Bluetooth sensors gather data from a much higher number of vehicles. In this paper we present Fog BAT, a system that combines GPS data with Bluetooth data. The goal of the system is to retain the advantages of both. We show how the data types are aligned to ensure that data from each sensor type is related to the exact same part of the road network and cover the same time period. Using very large real-world data sets, we use the system to compare travel speeds based on each data type, and how the use of both data types simultaneously can improve the accuracy of computed travel speeds and congestion levels.

FoGBAT: Combining Bluetooth and GPS Data for Better Traffic Analytics

The ability to timely process significant amounts of continuously updated spatial data is mandatory for an increasing number of applications. In this paper we focus on a specific data-intensive problem concerning the repeated processing of huge amounts of k nearest neighbours (k-NN) queries over massive sets of moving objects, where the spatial extents of queries and the position of objects are continuously modified over time. In particular, we propose a novel hybrid CPU/GPU pipeline that significantly accelerate query processing thanks to a combination of ad-hoc data structures and non-trivial memory access patterns. To the best of our knowledge this is the first work that exploits GPUs to efficiently solve repeated k-NN queries over massive sets of continuously moving objects, even characterized by highly skewed spatial distributions. In comparison with state-of-the-art sequential CPU-based implementations, our method highlights significant speedups in the order of 10x-20x, depending on the datasets, even when considering cheap GPUs.

As the information society develops, the “digital divide” grows. On the other hand, appropriate uses of new technologies can bridge the divide and enable new user groups to access information and participate in communication. In particular, people with disabilities may benefit from the development. We propose a tool to monitor the accessibility to content on the Internet. Using data warehouse techniques, we can discover how some accessibility properties depend on variables such as publishing tools, operating system, script language, geographical location, etc. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) [1] of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) have been adopted by eEurope2002 and are recommended for all public information in all member states. The guidelines, promoting multiple representation of content, are useful in many contexts. For example, a car driver “reading” electronic mail can make use of tools developed for persons who are blind. Benchmarking web pages can also be useful for ranking results from a search engine for a blind person. Several automatic validators, such as the HTML validator from the W3C [1] or A-prompt [2], are already in use. However, the use of data warehouse technology in this context seems to be a new approach. An evaluation and report language (EARL) [1] is being developed by the W3C.
