Journal ArticleDOI
Calorimetric observation of the melting of free water nanoparticles at cryogenic temperatures.
Christian Hock,Martin Schmidt,R. Kuhnen,Christof Bartels,L. Ma,L. Ma,Hellmut Haberland,Bernd von Issendorff +7 more
TL;DR: At the transition temperature the heat capacity strongly increases, which marks the onset of melting, and the measured caloric curves of the clusters are bulklike at low temperatures but show a well-defined, particle-size specific transition at 93+/-3 K.
Journal ArticleDOI
Probing the angular momentum character of the valence orbitals of free sodium nanoclusters.
TL;DR: Well-defined classes of energy dependence related to the approximate angular momenta of the bound-state orbitals indicate that the overall character of the valence electron wave functions is not appreciably influenced by the interaction with the ion background.
Journal ArticleDOI
Observation of the adsorption and desorption of vibrationally excited molecules on a metal surface.
Pranav R. Shirhatti,Pranav R. Shirhatti,Pranav R. Shirhatti,Igor Rahinov,Kai Golibrzuch,Kai Golibrzuch,Jörn Werdecker,Jan Geweke,Jan Geweke,Jan Altschäffel,Jan Altschäffel,Sumit Kumar,Daniel J. Auerbach,Daniel J. Auerbach,Christof Bartels,Christof Bartels,Alec M. Wodtke,Alec M. Wodtke +17 more
TL;DR: The adsorption and subsequent desorption of long-lived vibrationally excited CO molecules from a gold surface have now been observed, suggesting that vibrational promotion of surface chemistry might be more prevalent than currently thought.
Journal ArticleDOI
NO Vibrational Energy Transfer on a Metal Surface: Still a Challenge to First-Principles Theory
Bastian C. Krüger,Nils Bartels,Christof Bartels,Alexander Kandratsenka,John C. Tully,Alec M. Wodtke,Tim Schäfer +6 more
TL;DR: In this article, a comparison of recently reported experiments characterizing the multiquantum vibrational relaxation of NO on Au(111) for a wider range of incidence translational and vibrational energies to independent electron surface hopping (IESH) and molecular dynamics with electronic friction (MDEF) calculations for these conditions is presented.
Journal ArticleDOI
Premelting and postmelting in clusters.
Christian Hock,Christof Bartels,Samuel Straßburg,Martin Schmidt,Hellmut Haberland,Bernd von Issendorff,Andrés Aguado +6 more
TL;DR: Caloric curves for sodium clusters with N=139 and 147 atoms show a fine structure near the solid-to-liquid transition, but neither of the two sizes exhibit surface melting.
