Journal ArticleDOI
Epilepsy in Onchocerciasis Endemic Areas: Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Population-Based Surveys
Sébastien D. S. Pion,Christoph Kaiser,Fernand Boutros-Toni,Amandine Cournil,Melanie M. Taylor,Stefanie E. O. Meredith,Ansgar Stufe,Ione Bertocchi,Walter Kipp,Pierre-Marie Preux,Michel Boussinesq +10 more
TL;DR: Examination of the relationship between onchocerciasis prevalence and that of epilepsy using available data collected at community level gives further evidence that onchokerciatic disease burden might have to be re-estimated by taking into account this relationship.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ultrasonographical investigation of periportal fibrosis in children with Schistosoma mansoni infection: reversibility of morbidity seven months after treatment with praziquantel
Q. Mohamed-Ali,E. Doehring-Schwerdtfeger,I. M. Abdel-Rahim,J. Schlake,R Kardorff,Doris Franke,Christoph Kaiser,Mamoun Elsheikh,M. Abdalla,P Schafer +9 more
TL;DR: It was concluded that within seven months therapy with praziquantel resulted in a considerable qualitative improvement of PF in Sudanese schoolchildren with S. mansoni infection.
Journal ArticleDOI
Case-control studies on the relationship between onchocerciasis and epilepsy: systematic review and meta-analysis.
TL;DR: Analysis of indicators giving information on infection intensity, namely nodule palpation and quantitative microfilaria count in untreated patients, support the hypothesis that intensity of infection with O. volvulus is involved in the etiology of epilepsy.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sonomorphological abnormalities in Sudanese children with Schistosoma mansoni infection: a proposed staging-system for field diagnosis of periportal fibrosis.
Ekkehard Doehring-Schwerdtfeger,Ghorashi Mohamed-Ali,I. M. Abdel-Rahim,R Kardorff,Doris Franke,Christoph Kaiser,Mamoun Elsheikh,Jochen H. H. Ehrich +7 more
TL;DR: For the purpose of staging sonographical abnormalities induced by Schistosoma mansoni infection in childhood, 536 patients aged 6-15 years underwent extensive sonographical examination.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ultrasonographical investigation of periportal fibrosis in children with Schistosoma mansoni infection : evaluation of morbidity
Ekkehard Doehring-Schwerdtfeger,I. M. Abdel-Rahim,Q. Mohamed-Ali,Mamoun Elsheikh,J. Schlake,R Kardorff,Doris Franke,Christoph Kaiser,Jochen H. H. Ehrich +8 more
TL;DR: There was a strong relation between severity of ultrasonographically detectable fibrosis with intensity of egg excretion in the 204 patients who showed periportal fibrosis, and high risk patients can be detected at a childhood stage by measuring the intensity of infection and investigating the liver by ultrasound.
