The presence of a sample in the neutron field of a nuclear reactor creates a perturbation of the local neutron fluxes. In general, the interpretation of the sample activation due to thermal and epithermal neutrons requires the knowledge of two corrective parameters: the thermal neutron self-shielding factor, Gth, and the resonance neutron self-shielding factor, Gres. Thermal neutron self-shielding factors in different materials (Al, Au, Cd, Co, Cu, Eu, Gd, In, Ir, Mo, Ni, Pt, Pb, Rh, Sc, Sm and Ta) and different geometries (foils, wires, spheres and) have been calculated by using the MCNP code.

The microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition technique has been employed to grow polycrystalline diamond films on p-doped Si (100) substrates starting from highly diluted (1% CH 4 in H 2 ) gas mixtures. Coplanar interdigitated Cr/Au contacts have been thermally evaporated on two samples about 8 µm thick having different grain size. Dark current-voltage (I–V) measurements and impedance characterization have been found to be dependent on the grain size and on the quality of the examined samples.

Courses run by the School of the Built Environment have a range of entry requirements that enable diverse students and those with lower academic qualifications to gain entry. This results in a particular challenge for the Documentation & Estimating module, which is a very practical, skillsand competence-based module. It is delivered to large tutorial cohorts of mixed courses, abilities, ages and experience. Many students need one-toone guidance to understand what, practically, they have to do. They are given the theory first in a lecture and then have practical tutorials to carry out assessed exercises with limited tutor contact time. The module includes some basic surveying techniques and a levelling exercise which involves the transfer of a level from an assumed benchmark to establish a temporary benchmark some distance away. Many students have problems with computation of results. In spite of a careful introduction and explanation of the use of the instruments and techniques, many students find it difficult to visualise what is happening.

Building retrofit, refurbishment, and upgrading inevitably include aspects such as maintenance, repair, restoration, and extension. These major components of construction activity regularly account for only slightly less than half of the UK construction industry’s total output. The activities can be generally described as “repair and maintenance” by governments for statistical purposes. There is much to consider prior to upgrading and enhancing a building’s thermal performance. Primarily, the focus is on improving the whole building, whilst ensuring that the changes made to one part of a building do not adversely impact another part, or result in latent defects, or result in unexpected consequences. The EU Directive on the Energy Performance of Buildings (EPBD) contains strict provisions for further energy reduction in buildings, stating “Measures to improve further the energy performance of buildings should take into account climatic and local conditions as well as indoor climate environment and cost-effectiveness”.
