Luminescent Functional Metal–Organic Frameworks

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) display a wide range of luminescent behaviors resulting from the multifaceted nature of their structure. In this critical review we discuss the origins of MOF luminosity, which include the linker, the coordinated metal ions, antenna effects, excimer and exciplex formation, and guest molecules. The literature describing these effects is comprehensively surveyed, including a categorization of each report according to the type of luminescence observed. Finally, we discuss potential applications of luminescent MOFs. This review will be of interest to researchers and synthetic chemists attempting to design luminescent MOFs, and those engaged in the extension of MOFs to applications such as chemical, biological, and radiation detection, medical imaging, and electro-optical devices (141 references).

Luminescent Metal–Organic Frameworks

A geometrical analysis has been performed on π–π stacking in metal complexes with aromatic nitrogen-containing ligands based on a Cambridge Structural Database search and on X-ray data of examples in the recent literature. It is evident that a face-to-face π–π alignment where most of the ring-plane area overlaps is a rare phenomenon. The usual π interaction is an offset or slipped stacking, i.e. the rings are parallel displaced. The ring normal and the vector between the ring centroids form an angle of about 20° up to centroid–centroid distances of 3.8 A. Such a parallel-displaced structure also has a contribution from π–σ attraction, the more so with increasing offset. Only a limited number of structures with a near to perfect facial alignment exists. The term π–π stacking is occasionally used even when there is no substantial overlap of the π-ring planes. There is a number of metal–ligand complexes where only the edges of the rings interact in what would be better described a C–H⋯π attraction.

A critical account on π–π stacking in metal complexes with aromatic nitrogen-containing ligands

Lanthanide ions possess fascinating optical properties and their discovery, first industrial uses and present high technological applications are largely governed by their interaction with light. Lighting devices (economical luminescent lamps, light emitting diodes), television and computer displays, optical fibres, optical amplifiers, lasers, as well as responsive luminescent stains for biomedical analysis, medical diagnosis, and cell imaging rely heavily on lanthanide ions. This critical review has been tailored for a broad audience of chemists, biochemists and materials scientists; the basics of lanthanide photophysics are highlighted together with the synthetic strategies used to insert these ions into mono- and polymetallic molecular edifices. Recent advances in NIR-emitting materials, including liquid crystals, and in the control of luminescent properties in polymetallic assemblies are also presented. (210 references.)

Engineering Metal Organic Frameworks for Heterogeneous Catalysis

Five novel interesting d10 metal coordination polymers, [Zn(PDCO)(H2O)2]n (PDCO = pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid N-oxide) (1), [Zn2(PDCO)2(4,4‘-bpy)2(H2O)2·3H2O]n (bpy = bipyridine) (2), [Zn(PDCO)(bix)]n (bix = 1,4-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene) (3), [Zn(PDCO)(bbi)·0.5H2O]n (bbi = 1,1‘-(1,4-butanediyl)bis(imidazole)) (4), and [Cd(PDCO)(bix)1.5·1.5H2O]n (5), have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and structurally characterized. Polymer 1 possesses a one-dimensional (1D) helical chainlike structure with 41 helices running along the c-axis with a pitch of 10.090 A. Polymer 2 has an infinite chiral two-dimensional (2D) brick-wall-like layer structure in the ac plane built from achiral components, while both 3 and 4 exhibit an infinite 2D herringbone architecture, respectively extended in the ac and ab plane. A highly sensitive fluorescent probe 1 for selective detection of Hg ion in mixed N,N-dimethylformamide aqueous media was designed and prepared by incorporating the well-known Rhodamine 6G fluorophore and a carbohydrazone binding unit into one molecule. The fluorescent probe 1 can detect the parts per billion level of HgII in a mixed aqueous environment and displays a highly selective response of fluorescence enhancement toward HgII.

A large protonated water cluster, H+(H2O)27, has been trapped and stabilized within the well-modulated cavity of a 3D metal-organic framework formed by cobalt(II) and 4,4'-bipyridine-N,N'-dioxide with a globular Keggin structure [PW12O4]3- anion as template. The structurally characterized protonated water cluster might comprise a (H2O)26 shell with Oh symmetry and a monowater core within the center which is suggested to be a hydronium ion with the Eigen model.
