Journal ArticleDOI
Prevalence of obesity, hypertension, and diabetes, and cascade of care in sub-Saharan Africa: a cross-sectional, population-based study in rural and urban Malawi.
Alison J Price,Amelia C. Crampin,Alemayehu Amberbir,Ndoliwe Kayuni-Chihana,Crispin Musicha,Terence Tafatatha,Keith Branson,Debbie A Lawlor,Elenaus Mwaiyeghele,Lawrence Nkhwazi,Liam Smeeth,Neil Pearce,Elizabeth Munthali,Beatrice Mwagomba,Charles Mwansambo,Judith R. Glynn,Shabbar Jaffar,Moffat J. Nyirenda +17 more
TL;DR: Overweight and obesity, hypertension, and diabetes were highly prevalent in urban and rural Malawi, more so in urban residents, the less poor, and better educated than in rural, the poorest, and least educated participants.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hypertension and diabetes in Africa: design and implementation of a large population-based study of burden and risk factors in rural and urban Malawi.
Amelia C. Crampin,Ndoliwe Kayuni,Alemayehu Amberbir,Crispin Musicha,Olivier Koole,Terence Tafatatha,Keith Branson,Jacqueline Saul,Elenaus Mwaiyeghele,Lawrence Nkhwazi,Amos Phiri,Alison J Price,Beatrice Mwagomba,Charles Mwansambo,Shabbar Jaffar,Moffat J. Nyirenda +15 more
TL;DR: It is feasible to develop large scale studies that can reliably inform the public health approach to diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other NCDs in Sub-Saharan Africa and it is essential to capture both rural and urban populations to address disparities in risk factors, including age structure.
Journal ArticleDOI
Measurement and initial characterization of leukocyte telomere length in 474,074 participants in UK Biobank
Veryan Codd,Matthew Denniff,Chloe Elizabeth Swinfield,S C Warner,M. Papakonstantinou,S. Sheth,Dominika E Nanus,Charley A. Budgeon,Crispin Musicha,V. Bountziouka,Q. Wang,R. Bramley,Elias Allara,Stephen Kaptoge,Svetlana Stoma,Tao Jiang,Adam S. Butterworth,Alexander W. Wood,Emanuele Di Angelantonio,John F. Thompson,John Danesh,Christopher P. Nelson,N J Samani +22 more
TL;DR: In this article , the measurement and initial characterization of leukocyte telomere length (LTL) in 474,074 participants in UK Biobank was reported. But the authors did not investigate the biological consequences of variation in LTL.
Journal ArticleDOI
Accessing clinical services and retention in care following screening for hypertension and diabetes among Malawian adults: an urban/rural comparison.
Crispin Musicha,Amelia C. Crampin,Ndoliwe Kayuni,Olivier Koole,Alemayehu Amberbir,Beatrice Mwagomba,Shabbar Jaffar,Moffat J. Nyirenda +7 more
TL;DR: Screening for hypertension and diabetes identifies large numbers of individuals who need further clinical assessment, but strategies are needed to ensure better linkage and retention into care.
Journal ArticleDOI
Modifiable traits, healthy behaviours, and leukocyte telomere length: a population-based study in UK Biobank
V. Bountziouka,Crispin Musicha,Elias Allara,Stephen Kaptoge,Qingning Wang,Emanuele Di Angelantonio,Adam S. Butterworth,John F. Thompson,John Danesh,Angela M. Wood,Christopher P. Nelson,Veryan Codd,Nilesh J. Samani +12 more
TL;DR: In this paper , the authors investigated the extent to which telomere length might be modifiable through lifestyle and behaviour, and whether such modification has any clinical consequences, and found that healthy behaviours explained less than 0·2% of the total variation in LTL and did not significantly modify the association of LTL with risk of any of the diseases studied.
