Journal ArticleDOI
BCG-induced increase in interferon-gamma response to mycobacterial antigens and efficacy of BCG vaccination in Malawi and the UK: two randomised controlled studies
Gillian F. Black,Rosemary E. Weir,Sian Floyd,L. Bliss,D. K. Warndorff,Amelia C. Crampin,Bagrey Ngwira,Lifted Sichali,Bernadette Nazareth,Jenefer M. Blackwell,Keith Branson,Steven D. Chaguluka,Linda Donovan,Elizabeth R. Jarman,Elizabeth C. King,Paul E. M. Fine,Hazel M. Dockrell +16 more
TL;DR: The magnitude of the BCG-attributable increase in IFN-gamma responsiveness to M tuberculosis PPD, from before to 1 year post-vaccination, correlates better with the known levels of protection induced by immunisation with BCG than does the absolute value of the IFN -gamma or DTH response after vaccination.
Journal ArticleDOI
Profile: the Karonga Health and Demographic Surveillance System.
Amelia C. Crampin,Albert Dube,Sebastian Mboma,Alison J Price,Menard Chihana,Andreas Jahn,Angela Baschieri,Anna Molesworth,Elnaeus Mwaiyeghele,Keith Branson,Sian Floyd,Nuala McGrath,Paul E. M. Fine,Neil French,Judith R. Glynn,Basia Zaba +15 more
TL;DR: The Karonga HDSS provides a structure for surveys of socio-economic status, HIV sero-prevalence and incidence, sexual behaviour, fertility intentions and a sampling frame for other studies, as well as evaluating the impact of interventions, such as antiretroviral therapy and vaccination programmes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prevalence of obesity, hypertension, and diabetes, and cascade of care in sub-Saharan Africa: a cross-sectional, population-based study in rural and urban Malawi.
Alison J Price,Amelia C. Crampin,Alemayehu Amberbir,Ndoliwe Kayuni-Chihana,Crispin Musicha,Terence Tafatatha,Keith Branson,Debbie A Lawlor,Elenaus Mwaiyeghele,Lawrence Nkhwazi,Liam Smeeth,Neil Pearce,Elizabeth Munthali,Beatrice Mwagomba,Charles Mwansambo,Judith R. Glynn,Shabbar Jaffar,Moffat J. Nyirenda +17 more
TL;DR: Overweight and obesity, hypertension, and diabetes were highly prevalent in urban and rural Malawi, more so in urban residents, the less poor, and better educated than in rural, the poorest, and least educated participants.
Journal ArticleDOI
Population differences in immune responses to Bacille Calmette-Guérin vaccination in infancy.
Maeve K. Lalor,Anne Ben-Smith,Patricia Gorak-Stolinska,Rosemary E. Weir,Sian Floyd,Rose Blitz,Hazzie Mvula,Melanie J. Newport,Keith Branson,Nuala McGrath,Amelia C. Crampin,Paul E. M. Fine,Hazel M. Dockrell +12 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that population differences in immune responses after BCG vaccination are observed among infants, as well as among young adults.
Journal ArticleDOI
BCG Vaccination Induces Different Cytokine Profiles Following Infant BCG Vaccination in the UK and Malawi
Maeve K. Lalor,Sian Floyd,Patricia Gorak-Stolinska,Anne Ben-Smith,Rosemary E. Weir,Steven G. Smith,Melanie J. Newport,Rose Blitz,Hazzie Mvula,Keith Branson,Nuala McGrath,Amelia C. Crampin,Paul E. M. Fine,Hazel M. Dockrell +13 more
TL;DR: Malawian infants make cytokine responses following BCG vaccination, but the cytokine profile is different from that in the UK, which may indicate variability in the protective efficacy of infantBCG vaccination.
