Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is acknowledged as an important driver of change, empowering learners to take the decisions and actions needed to build a just and economically viable society respectful of both the environment and cultural diversity. This type of education addresses learning content and outcomes, innovative pedagogy and 'learning by doing', and uses a whole-school approach to engage communities in achieving sustainable change. This publication explores key issues related to ESD policy and practice with the aim of helping to accelerate the reorientation of education towards achieving a sustainable and resilient world. Topics include key ESD competencies and themes, policy, changes in the learning environment, teacher training, youth as lead actors, scaling-up action, and the monitoring of progress towards Target 4.7 of Sustainable Development Goal 4. ESD is explicitly mentioned in this target, which aims to ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development and is understood as an important means to achieve all the other 16 SDGs.

Para algumas pessoas esses processos evolutivos nao seguem iguais para todos, existe uma especificidade de se colocar diante dos problemas e saber enfrenta-los e a questao primordial. A morte e vista sob diversos contextos cultural, social, familiar e vem para cada um de acordo com sua posicao frente ao mundo; o lidar pode estar definido ou causar outros comportamentos adversos. In the 1940s, Carl Rogers introduced the notion of a client-centred or person-centred approach, originally called the ‘non-directive approach’. Communicative methodology has been acknowledged as having an impact at all levels: social, political and scientific. The social impact is achieved with the communicative methodology by involving the people or communities we intend to study from the beginning to the end of the research. There are positive benefits to those involved, which increases the impact. Therefore, the communicative methodology enhances the potential of stakeholders (including those traditionally excluded) for social transformation through the use of egalitarian dialogue. Additionally, those stakeholders co-lead the research and promote change in their own social environments because of their inclusion in all stages of the research process. The theoretical basis of the communicative methodology led to the assumption of postulates that enable social transformation. Researchers, taking into account the theoretical principles and postulates, interpret reality through dialogic knowledge while researching with vulnerable populations. This article illustrates how it is possible to attain social impact using the communicative methodology in diverse contexts and points out how the communicative organization of research and the communicative analysis of data can be decisive in attaining social impact. Such change contributes to the social and educational transformation of reality and to improving the lives of vulnerable populations.

Education as the Practice of Freedom

Objectives: To identify what are the difficulties of the nursing staff in the management of technologies during intravenous therapy (IVT) and discuss the difficulties identified under the perspective of patient's safety. Method: Descriptive study of qualitative approach with data collected by semi-structured interview and analyzed by the Alceste software. Results: The greatest difficulty of cognitive and technical emphasis was the lack of training; and regarding administrative emphasis, the greatest difficulty was the lack of material and human resources. Infusion pumps and their proper use were highlighted as the technological resource that most contributed to patient safety. Final considerations: The lack of training is presented as the greatest difficulty of nursing professionals and permeates safety issues of both patient and professional when using the hard technologies in IVT. Training is essential to the development of techniques, considered nursing tools.

Use of technologies in intravenous therapy: contributions to a safer practice

Aim: To describe the point of view of nurses regarding the moment of death in the process of organ donation in an intensive care unit of a transplant hospital. Method: This is a descriptive, qualitative study, performed with fifteen nurses working in intensive care. Alceste software was used to treat the data collected, which identified the category “ontological dimension of caring due to the moment of death in the process of organ donation and harvesting”. Results: During their practice nurses experience a dialectic relationship between the act of donation and facing death through the nursing care provided to the potential donor and his family. Discussion: The process of dying comes up against on a daily basis, when nurses have to deal with the unknown, and face the daily fear of fighting against the possibility of death. Conclusion: There is a need to rethink/review standards, to reconsider the educational background of nursing staff, and to demystify institutional truths when dealing with the unknown.
