Long-Term Ecosystem Response to the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill

TL;DR: The ecosystem response to the 1989 spill of oil from the Exxon Valdez into Prince William Sound, Alaska, shows that current practices for assessing ecological risks of oil in the oceans and, by extension, other toxic sources should be changed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Applying Metapopulation Theory to Conservation of Migratory Birds

TL;DR: The authors used metapopulation theory to understand the degree of demographic independence among subpopulations of migratory animals, and showed that subpopulation demographic independence is related to geographic distribution and dispersal probabilities.
Journal ArticleDOI

Evaluating the validity of using unverified indices of body condition

TL;DR: This work evaluated the ability of a number of unverified indices frequently found in the literature to predict absolute and proportional levels of fat and protein across five species of waterfowl, and found that those accounting for body size never predicted absolute protein more precisely than body mass.
Journal ArticleDOI

Winter survival of adult female harlequin ducks in relation to history of contamination by the Exxon Valdez oil spill

TL;DR: It is concluded that continued effects of the oil spill likely restricted recovery of harlequin duck populations through at least 1998, and area differences in survival offer a likely mechanism for observed declines in populations on oiled areas.
Journal ArticleDOI

Cytochrome P450 1A Induction in Sea Ducks Inhabiting Nearshore Areas of Prince William Sound, Alaska

TL;DR: Following the Exxon-Valdez oil spill, hepatic rates of EROD activity and thus, P450 1A expression were significantly higher in harlequin ducks from oiled areas of Prince William Sound, Alaska when compared to birds from unoiled sites as mentioned in this paper.
