Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of apical foramen widening on the healing of chronic periapical lesions in dogs' teeth after root canal filling with Sealer 26 or Endomethasone. Study design Forty root canals of dogs' teeth were used. After pulp extirpation, the canals were exposed to the oral cavity for 180 days for induction of periapical lesions, and then instrumented up to a size 55 K-file at the apical cemental barrier. In 20 roots, the cemental canal was penetrated and widened up to a size 25 K-file; in the other 20 roots, the cemental canal was preserved (no apical foramen widening). All canals received a calcium hydroxide intracanal dressing for 21 days and were filled with gutta-percha and 1 of the 2 sealers: group 1: Sealer 26/apical foramen widening; group 2: Sealer 26/no apical foramen widening; group 3: Endomethasone/apical foramen widening; group 4: Endomethasone/no apical foramen widening. The animals were killed after 180 days, and serial histologic sections from the roots were prepared for histomorphologic analysis. Scores were assigned according to preestablished histomorphologic parameters and analyzed statistically by Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests. Results Regarding new cementum formation, repair of cementum and bone resorption areas, presence of microorganisms, inflammatory cell infiltrate and periodontal ligament conditions, significantly better periapical healing was obtained when foramen widening was done and Sealer 26 was used. Conclusion Apical foramen widening and calcium hydroxide–containing sealer were more favorable to the healing of chronic periapical lesions.

In the Pacific Ocean, air and ocean temperatures, atmospheric carbon dioxide, landings of anchovies and sardines, and the productivity of coastal and open ocean ecosystems have varied over periods of about 50 years. In the mid-1970s, the Pacific changed from a cool “anchovy regime” to a warm “sardine regime.” A shift back to an anchovy regime occurred in the middle to late 1990s. These large-scale, naturally occurring variations must be taken into account when considering human-induced climate change and the management of ocean living resources.

From Anchovies to Sardines and Back—Multidecadal Change in the Pacific Ocean

This article presents the history and conceptualization of Archivematica, which was developed as a response to the need to develop an open-source digital preservation system (free software). The methodology adopted was that of exploratory, bibliographical and documentary research, having as main sources: reports, documentation, texts and scientific articles from national and international organizations, technologies, events and researchers. The article presents Archivematica as a preservation platform, which plays its role as a component of a Trusted Digital Archival Repository, and two basic digital object collection scenarios: with archival digital chain of custody and with chain of custody rupture. We conclude that the scenarios presented are just two of several possible scenarios in the preservation of digital objects using a preservation platform such as Archivematica, and that their proper use meets a Systemic Digital Preservation, which provides an archival digital chain of custody, aiming to maintain the reliability and authenticity of digital archival documents, with a holistic digital preservation approach, and not exclusively focused on the manual application of digital preservation strategies, which presuppose a rupture of the digital chain of custody, but rather incorporating and applying these strategies through an archival policy.

O papel do Archivematica no RDC-Arq e possíveis cenários de uso

This study describes and evaluates the possibility of two or more archival repositories maintaining levels of interoperability, so that independent, cooperative, federated, and shared functional entities archives are addressed. In order to do so, it is based on the bibliographical survey of previously published materials, through the selection of books, technical publications and scientific articles. Interoperability is the prism of the discussion, and reliable digital archival repositories correspond to the guiding category. Thus, the data are analyzed qualitatively and discussed according to the deductive logic in order to be characterized as an article of no systematic review. It is observed that the interoperability between archival repositories brings benefits to the digital preservation communities that entail the saving of resources, the optimization of information search and the development of standards. Finally, this study clarifies concepts and possible interoperability scenarios for archival repositories, as well as providing a post-custodial view that highlights the importance of custody in view of succession perspectives.

Interoperabilidade entre repositórios arquivísticos digitais confiáveis

El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) produces ecosystem-wide changes and plays a large role in the productivity of the Southeast Pacific ocean. Artisanal fisheries, an important source of income and food stability, are greatly affected by ENSO. The relationship between ENSO climate variation and the abundance of previously unstudied commercially important species to the artisanal fishery in Ica, Peru was analyzed using generalized additive models fitted to catch per unit effort (CPUE) data. We found that the immediate availability of Peruvian rock seabass (Paralabrax humeralis), Lorna drum (Sciaena deliciosa) and Minor stardrum (Stellifer minor) increased during cold water La Nina events. ENSO also produced long-term changes in the abundance of fisheries resources up to two years after ENSO events. In the case of Cabinza grunt (Isacia conceptionis), CPUE was elevated 6 months to two years after La Nina events. While for other species like Flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) and P. humeralis, CPUE decreased between six months and two years after La Nina events. However, variation in the deviance explained between models indicates that the relative importance of ENSO as an environmental driver is species specific. This information can be used to assist in the development of management strategies of commercially important species in the Pacific Southeast and inform on the impacts of climate variation on artisanal fisheries. However, further study is warranted to examine the underlying mechanisms.
