Journal ArticleDOI
Highly Sensitive Detection of Malaria Parasitemia in a Malaria-Endemic Setting: Performance of a New Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification Kit in a Remote Clinic in Uganda
Heidi Hopkins,Iveth J. González,Spencer D. Polley,Patrick Angutoko,John Ategeka,Caroline Asiimwe,Bosco Agaba,Daniel J Kyabayinze,Colin J. Sutherland,Mark D. Perkins,David Bell +10 more
TL;DR: Malaria LAMP dramatically lowers the detection threshold achievable in malaria-endemic settings, providing a new tool for diagnosis, surveillance, and screening in elimination strategies.
Journal ArticleDOI
Operational accuracy and comparative persistent antigenicity of HRP2 rapid diagnostic tests for Plasmodium falciparum malaria in a hyperendemic region of Uganda
Daniel J Kyabayinze,James K Tibenderana,James K Tibenderana,George W Odong,John B Rwakimari,Helen Counihan +5 more
TL;DR: ICT is an accurate and appropriate test for operational use as a diagnostic tool where microscopy is unavailable, however, persistent antigenicity reduces the accuracy of this and other HRP2-based RDTs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Distinguishing recrudescence from reinfection in a longitudinal antimalarial drug efficacy study: comparison of results based on genotyping of msp-1, msp-2, and glurp
TL;DR: Comparing the 3 studied genes, msp-2 results were most accurate, and analysis of this single gene effectively distinguished recrudescence from reinfection in the study population.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sulfadoxine/pyrimethamine alone or with amodiaquine or artesunate for treatment of uncomplicated malaria: a longitudinal randomised trial.
Grant Dorsey,Denise Njama,Moses R. Kamya,Adithya Cattamanchi,Daniel J Kyabayinze,Sarah G. Staedke,Anne Gasasira,Philip J. Rosenthal +7 more
TL;DR: Sulfadoxine/pyrimethamine plus amodiaquine could be used as an inexpensive regimen to decrease the rate of subsequent episodes of malaria.
Journal ArticleDOI
Use of RDTs to improve malaria diagnosis and fever case management at primary health care facilities in Uganda
Daniel J Kyabayinze,Caroline Asiimwe,Damalie Nakanjako,Jane Nabakooza,Helen Counihan,James K Tibenderana,James K Tibenderana +6 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that RDT use is feasible at LLHCFs, and can lead to better targetting of malaria treatment, and that nationwide deployment of RDTs in a systematic manner should be prioritised in order to improve fever case management.
