Journal ArticleDOI
Malaria in Uganda: challenges to control on the long road to elimination: I. Epidemiology and current control efforts.
Adoke Yeka,Anne Gasasira,Arthur Mpimbaza,Jane Achan,Joaniter I. Nankabirwa,Sam L. Nsobya,Sarah G. Staedke,Martin J. Donnelly,Fred Wabwire-Mangen,Ambrose Talisuna,Grant Dorsey,Moses R. Kamya,Philip J. Rosenthal +12 more
TL;DR: There is no convincing evidence that the burden of malaria has decreased in Uganda in recent years, and major challenges to malaria control include very high malaria transmission intensity, inadequate health care resources, a weak health system, inadequate understanding of malaria epidemiology and the impact of control interventions, and inadequate epidemic preparedness and response.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of HIV-1 Infection on Antimalarial Treatment Outcomes in Uganda: A Population-Based Study
Moses R. Kamya,Anne Gasasira,Adoke Yeka,Nathan Bakyaita,Samuel L. Nsobya,Damon Francis,Philip J. Rosenthal,Grant Dorsey,Diane V. Havlir +8 more
TL;DR: The HIV-1 seroprevalence rate was surprisingly high in adults presenting with malaria, and this finding supports the implementation of routine HIV counseling and testing for adults with uncomplicated falciparum malaria.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sulfadoxine/pyrimethamine alone or with amodiaquine or artesunate for treatment of uncomplicated malaria: a longitudinal randomised trial.
Grant Dorsey,Denise Njama,Moses R. Kamya,Adithya Cattamanchi,Daniel J Kyabayinze,Sarah G. Staedke,Anne Gasasira,Philip J. Rosenthal +7 more
TL;DR: Sulfadoxine/pyrimethamine plus amodiaquine could be used as an inexpensive regimen to decrease the rate of subsequent episodes of malaria.
Journal ArticleDOI
Amodiaquine, sulfadoxine/pyrimethamine, and combination therapy for treatment of uncomplicated falciparum malaria in Kampala, Uganda: a randomised trial.
Sarah G. Staedke,Moses R. Kamya,Grant Dorsey,Anne Gasasira,Grace Ndeezi,Edwin D. Charlebois,Edwin D. Charlebois,Philip J. Rosenthal +7 more
TL;DR: The amodiaquine/sulfadoxine/pyrimethamine combination was the most effective, and could be the optimum low-cost alternative to chloroquine in Africa.
Journal ArticleDOI
Indoor Residual Spraying of Insecticide and Malaria Morbidity in a High Transmission Intensity Area of Uganda
Ruth Kigozi,Sanjiv M. Baxi,Anne Gasasira,Asadu Sserwanga,Stella Kakeeto,Sussann Nasr,Denis Rubahika,Gunawardena Dissanayake,Moses R. Kamya,Scott G. Filler,Grant Dorsey +10 more
TL;DR: IRS was associated with a reduction in malaria morbidity in an area of high transmission intensity in Uganda and the benefits appeared to be greatest after switching to a carbamate class of insecticide.
