Global threats to pinnipeds

TL;DR: The 2008 IUCN review of the status of the world's mammals identified marine mammals (IUCN 2008) as disproportionally threatened and data poor compared to their terrestrial counterparts, and their status was noted as a particular concern as mentioned in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI
Foraging behaviour and diet of lactating female southern sea lions (Otaria flavescens) in the Falkland Islands
TL;DR: Diet support the suggestion that lactating southern sea lions are mainly benthic foragers, and there was considerable overlap between the diet of sea lions and those of Gentoo and Magellanic penguins, which suggests that sea lions may compete with both species.
Journal ArticleDOI
Getting beneath the surface of marine mammal – fisheries competition
TL;DR: It is argued that a pragmatic approach, which considers the effect of ecological complexity while avoiding the indiscriminate addition of detail to mathematical models of competition, is the best way to provide scientific advice on issues that require urgent action.
Journal ArticleDOI
Estimating metabolic heat loss in birds and mammals by combining infrared thermography with biophysical modelling
Dominic J. McCafferty,Caroline Gilbert,William D. Paterson,Patrick Pomeroy,Dave Thompson,John Currie,André Ancel +6 more
TL;DR: IRT is a non-invasive method of measuring the relative energy cost of an animal in response to different environments, behaviours and physiological states and has successfully demonstrated that in birds and mammals heat loss is regulated from poorly insulated regions of the body.
Journal ArticleDOI
Using sparse survey data to investigate the declining abundance of British harbour seals
TL;DR: The results show that the number of harbour seals in eastern England has not increased since the end of the 2002 phocine distemper epidemic, and there is also evidence of a general decline in most of the large harbour seal colonies around Britain.
