Journal ArticleDOI
Observations of the effect of ionization-potential depression in hot dense plasma.
David Hoarty,P. Allan,Steven James,C. R. D. Brown,L. M. R. Hobbs,M. P. Hill,J.W.O. Harris,John J. L. Morton,M. G. Brookes,Ronnie Shepherd,James Dunn,H. Chen,E. Von Marley,Peter Beiersdorfer,Hyun-Kyung Chung,Richard W. Lee,Gregory V. Brown,J. Emig +17 more
TL;DR: The experimental data are in closer agreement with simulations using the model of Stewart and Pyatt and an alternative due to Ecker and Kröll suggested by recent x-ray free-electron laser experiments is suggested.
Journal ArticleDOI
Scaling the yield of laser-driven electron-positron jets to laboratory astrophysical applications.
Hui Chen,Frederico Fiuza,Frederico Fiuza,A. Link,A. Hazi,M. P. Hill,David Hoarty,Steven James,Shaun Kerr,D. D. Meyerhofer,J.F. Myatt,J. Park,Yasuhiko Sentoku,Gerald Williams +13 more
TL;DR: New experimental results obtained are reported that show directed laser-driven relativistic electron-positron jets with up to 30 times larger yields than previously obtained and a quadratic dependence of the positron yield on the laser energy.
Journal ArticleDOI
Measurements of electron transport in foils irradiated with a picosecond time scale laser pulse.
C. R. D. Brown,David Hoarty,Steven James,D J R Swatton,S. J. Hughes,J. W. Morton,T. M. Guymer,M. P. Hill,D. A. Chapman,J. E. Andrew,Andrew Comley,Ronnie Shepherd,James Dunn,H. Chen,Michael Schneider,Gregory V. Brown,Peter Beiersdorfer,J. Emig +17 more
TL;DR: The heating of solid foils by a picosecond time scale laser pulse has been studied by using x-ray emission spectroscopy and data are consistent with a model of electron transport that predicts the bulk of the target heating is due to return currents.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comprehensive description of the Orion laser facility
Nicholas Hopps,K. Oades,Jim Andrew,Colin D. Brown,Graham Cooper,Colin N. Danson,Simon Daykin,Stuart Duffield,Ray Edwards,David Egan,Stephen Elsmere,S. Gales,Mark Girling,E. T. Gumbrell,Ewan Harvey,David Hillier,David Hoarty,Colin Horsfield,Steven James,A. Leatherland,Stephen Masoero,Anthony L. Meadowcroft,Michael L. Norman,Stefan Parker,Stephen Rothman,Michael Rubery,Paul Treadwell,David Winter,Thomas H. Bett +28 more
TL;DR: The Orion laser facility at the atomic weapons establishment (AWE) in the UK has been operational since April 2013, fielding experiments that require both its long and short pulse capability as mentioned in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI
The application of laser-driven proton beams to the radiography of intense laser-hohlraum interactions
Gianluca Sarri,C. A. Cecchetti,Lorenzo Romagnani,C.M. Brown,David Hoarty,Steven James,John J. L. Morton,Mark E Dieckmann,R. Jung,Oswald Willi,S. V. Bulanov,Francesco Pegoraro,Marco Borghesi +12 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the electric field at the front of a gold hohlraum was measured by a radiographic technique which employs a beam of laser-accelerated protons.
