Collisionless shocks in laser-produced plasma generate monoenergetic high-energy proton beams
Dan Haberberger,Sergei Tochitsky,Frederico Fiuza,Chao Gong,Ricardo Fonseca,Ricardo Fonseca,Luis O. Silva,Warren Mori,C. Joshi +8 more
TL;DR: Discovery of a laser–plasma acceleration mechanism that generates 20 MeV proton beams with a 1% spread is a promising step in the development of laser-driven proton accelerators.
Journal ArticleDOI
Observation of magnetic field generation via the Weibel instability in interpenetrating plasma flows
Channing Huntington,Frederico Fiuza,Jason Ross,Alex Zylstra,R. P. Drake,Dustin Froula,Gianluca Gregori,Nathan Kugland,Carolyn Kuranz,M. C. Levy,Chikang Li,Jena Meinecke,Taichi Morita,R. D. Petrasso,C. Plechaty,Bruce Remington,Dmitri Ryutov,Youichi Sakawa,Anatoly Spitkovsky,Hideaki Takabe,H.-S. Park +20 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the Weibel instability, a possible mechanism for developing such shocks, has been generated in a laboratory set-up with laser-generated plasmas, and it has been shown that collisionless plasma shock waves are often driven by collisionless shock waves.
Journal ArticleDOI
Near-GeV Acceleration of Electrons by a Nonlinear Plasma Wave Driven by a Self-Guided Laser Pulse
Stefan Kneip,S. R. Nagel,S F Martins,Stuart Mangles,C. Bellei,Oleg Chekhlov,R. J. Clarke,Nicolas Delerue,E. J. Divall,G. Doucas,Klaus Ertel,Frederico Fiuza,Ricardo Fonseca,Peta Foster,S. J. Hawkes,C. J. Hooker,Karl Krushelnick,Warren Mori,Charlotte Palmer,K. Ta Phuoc,P. P. Rajeev,Jörg Schreiber,M. J. V. Streeter,D Urner,Jorge Vieira,Luis O. Silva,Zulfikar Najmudin +26 more
TL;DR: Three-dimensional particle in cell simulations show that the intensity within the guided filament is amplified beyond its initial focused value to a normalized vector potential of a0>6, thus driving a highly nonlinear plasma wave.
Journal ArticleDOI
Laser-driven shock acceleration of monoenergetic ion beams
Frederico Fiuza,A. Stockem,Elisabetta Boella,Ricardo Fonseca,Luis O. Silva,Dan Haberberger,Sergei Tochitsky,Chao Gong,Warren Mori,Chan Joshi +9 more
TL;DR: It is shown that monoenergetic ion beams can be accelerated by moderate Mach number collisionless, electrostatic shocks propagating in a long scale-length exponentially decaying plasma profile and that it is possible to generate ~200 MeV proton beams with state-of-the-art 100 TW class laser systems.
Journal ArticleDOI
Simulations of efficient Raman amplification into the multipetawatt regime
Raoul Trines,Frederico Fiuza,Robert Bingham,Ricardo Fonseca,Luis O. Silva,R.A. Cairns,Peter Norreys +6 more
TL;DR: Raman amplification has been proposed as a means to generate high-power laser pulses without the bulky and expensive components of conventional lasers, but with limited success as mentioned in this paper, and large-scale three-dimensional simulations enable researchers to identify conditions under which these limitations might be overcome.
