Journal ArticleDOI
Observations of the effect of ionization-potential depression in hot dense plasma.
David Hoarty,P. Allan,Steven James,C. R. D. Brown,L. M. R. Hobbs,M. P. Hill,J.W.O. Harris,John J. L. Morton,M. G. Brookes,Ronnie Shepherd,James Dunn,H. Chen,E. Von Marley,Peter Beiersdorfer,Hyun-Kyung Chung,Richard W. Lee,Gregory V. Brown,J. Emig +17 more
TL;DR: The experimental data are in closer agreement with simulations using the model of Stewart and Pyatt and an alternative due to Ecker and Kröll suggested by recent x-ray free-electron laser experiments is suggested.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: In this paper , the authors achieved a burning-plasma state in the laboratory using a strategy to increase the spatial scale of the capsule through two different implosion concepts and showed that fusion self-heating in excess of the mechanical work injected into the implosions, satisfying several burningplasma metrics.
Journal ArticleDOI
Absorption of short laser pulses on solid targets in the ultrarelativistic regime.
Yuan Ping,Ronnie Shepherd,Barbara F. Lasinski,Max Tabak,H. Chen,Hyun-Kyung Chung,K. B. Fournier,Stephanie Hansen,Andreas Kemp,Duane A. Liedahl,Klaus Widmann,Scott Wilks,Wojciech Rozmus,Mark Sherlock +13 more
TL;DR: The first direct measurements of total absorption of short laser pulses on solid targets in the ultrarelativistic regime are reported, showing an enhanced absorption at intensities above 10(20) W/cm(2), reaching 60% for near-normal incidence and 80%-90% for 45 degrees incidence.
Journal ArticleDOI
Laboratory Simulation of Charge Exchange-Produced X-ray Emission from Comets
Peter Beiersdorfer,Kevin R. Boyce,Gregory V. Brown,H. Chen,Steven M. Kahn,R. L. Kelley,Mark May,R. E. Olson,Frederick S. Porter,Caroline Kilbourn Stahle,W. A. Tillotson +10 more
TL;DR: A charge exchange emission model is developed that successfully reproduces the soft x-ray spectrum of comet Linear C/1999 S4, observed with the Chandra X-ray Observatory.
Journal ArticleDOI
Measurement of the two-loop lamb shift in lithiumlike U89+.
TL;DR: Using the SuperEBIT electron beam ion trap, the 2s(1/2)-2p( 1/2) transitions in U88+ and U89+ are measured and the available precision is improved by nearly an order of magnitude.
