Journal ArticleDOI
A Phaseolus vulgaris Diversity Panel for Andean Bean Improvement
Karen A. Cichy,Karen A. Cichy,Timothy G. Porch,James S. Beaver,Perry B. Cregan,Deidré Fourie,Raymond P. Glahn,Michael A. Grusak,Kelvin Kamfwa,Dennis N. Katuuramu,Phil McClean,Eninka Mndolwa,Susan Nchimbi-Msolla,Marcial A. Pastor-Corrales,Phillip N. Miklas +14 more
TL;DR: Variability was found for resistance to rust, angular leaf spot and common bacterial blight diseases; tolerance to low soil fertility; cooking time; and other traits that can be used to improve Andean bean germplasm for Africa and the Americas.
Journal ArticleDOI
Seedling root architecture and its relationship with seed yield across diverse environments in Phaseolus vulgaris
Christopher F. Strock,James Burridge,Anica S.F. Massas,James S. Beaver,Steve Beebe,Samuel A. Camilo,Deidré Fourie,Celestina Nhagupana Jochua,Magalhaes Amade Miguel,Phillip N. Miklas,Eninka Mndolwa,Susan Nchimbi-Msolla,José A. Polanía,Timothy G. Porch,Juan Carlos Rosas,Jennifer J. Trapp,Jonathan P. Lynch +16 more
TL;DR: The results highlight the existence and influence of integrated root phenotypes for adaptation to edaphic stress, and suggest root phenes have value as breeding targets under real-world conditions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genome-Wide Linkage and Association Mapping of Halo Blight Resistance in Common Bean to Race 6 of the Globally Important Bacterial Pathogen
Andrew J. Tock,Andrew J. Tock,Deidré Fourie,Peter Glen Walley,Eric B. Holub,Alvaro Soler,Karen A. Cichy,Marcial A. Pastor-Corrales,Qijian Song,Timothy G. Porch,John P. Hart,Renato C. C. Vasconcellos,Joana G. Vicente,Guy C. Barker,Phillip N. Miklas +14 more
TL;DR: Evidence is provided for marker-assisted breeding for more durable halo blight control in common bean by combining alleles of race-nonspecific resistance (HB4.2 from PI 150414) and race-specific resistance ( HB5.1 from cv. Rojo).
Journal ArticleDOI
Analyses of African common bean ( Phaseolus vulgaris L.) germplasm using a SNP fingerprinting platform: diversity, quality control and molecular breeding
Bodo Raatz,Clare Mugisha Mukankusi,Juan David Lobaton,Juan David Lobaton,Alan Male,Virginia Chisale,Berhanu Amsalu,Deidré Fourie,Floride Mukamuhirwa,Kennedy Muimui,Bruce Mutari,Susan Nchimbi-Msolla,Stanley T. Nkalubo,Kidane Tumsa,Rowland Chirwa,Mywish K. Maredia,Chunlin He +16 more
TL;DR: A new resource for the common bean community, a SNP genotyping platform, a large SNP data set and a number of applications on how to utilize this information to improve the efficiency and quality of seed handling activities, breeding, and seed dissemination through molecular tools are presented.
Journal ArticleDOI
Tagging and Mapping Pse-1 Gene for Resistance to Halo Blight in Common Bean Differential Cultivar UI-3
TL;DR: A survey of advanced lines and cultivars revealed that the SCAR markers generated in this study will have utility for mark- er-assisted selection of Pse-1 in germplasm from the Andean gene pool and from race Mesoamerican within the Middle American gene pool (black, carioca).
