The 2008 crash has left all the established economic doctrines - equilibrium models, real business cycles, disequilibria models - in disarray. Part of the problem is due to Smith’s "veil of ignorance": individuals unknowingly pursue society’s interest and, as a result, have no clue as to the macroeconomic effects of their actions: witness the Keynes and Leontief multipliers, the concept of value added, fiat money, Engel’s law and technical progress, to name but a few of the macrofoundations of microeconomics. A good viewpoint to take bearings anew lies in comparing the post-Great Depression institutions with those emerging from Thatcher and Reagan’s economic policies: deregulation, exogenous vs. endoge- nous money, shadow banking vs. Volcker’s Rule. Very simply, the banks, whose lending determined deposits after Roosevelt, and were a public service became private enterprises whose deposits determine lending. These underlay the great moderation preceding 2006, and the subsequent crash.

The Economic Institutions of Capitalism

The subject of the study are the most commonly used bedding materials in freestall housing system in dairy cattle farming and the factors determining their choice. In recent years, in many countries as well as in Bulgaria there has been a tendency to change from small dairy cattle farms to larger ones by applying intensive farming systems. Many factors must be taken into account when developing appropriate interior design of dairy freestall barns. Among these factors is the providing of comfortable resting places with minimal risk of body injuries and bacterial infections. The bedding must meet many conditions: to be inexpensive, dry, not to support bacterial growth, not to contain pathogens, to be comfortable for cows to rest, and to be compatible with the manure cleaning system. Increased amounts of bedding have been shown to increase cow comfort by increasing the lying time, however controlling bacterial counts and udder health requires frequent removal of bedding material. The most widely used bedding materials in dairy cattle farming worldwide can be grouped into two main groups: organic - straw, hay (dried grass), sawdust, wood shavings, crop residues, composted manure and paper, and inorganic: sand, limestone, gypsum, rubber mats and mattresses, cement. When choosing bedding, first the comfort that it will provide to the animals must be considered, then whether the bedding will properly match the manure cleaning system and last but not least the price it will cost.

Factors determining the choice of bedding for freestall housing system in dairy cows farming - A review

This study examines the syndication of investments novel to a VC firm as a function of the firm's need and opportunity to do so. We distinguish two types of uncertainty that firms face when considering novel investments: egocentric, pertaining to making the right decisions, and altercentric, pertaining to being evaluated as a potential partner on the investment. Whereas the former increases the firm's need to syndicate the investment, the latter reduces the firm's opportunity to do so, making it contingent upon the firm's status and reputation for attracting potential partners. Using data on first-round venture capital investments, we find that novel investments are more likely to be syndicated. Moreover, this relationship is stronger for firms with higher status and weaker for firms with higher reputation. These results highlight a relational aspect of uncertainty, inherent in a particular VC firm — investment dyad, and suggest that status and reputation play different roles in aligning the need and opportunity to syndicate novel investments.

Glutathione-S-Transferases in Development, Progression and Therapy of Colorectal Cancer

A characteristic feature of inflamed lungs in bronchial asthma (BA) is airway remodeling. Due to limited information on this topic in the literature, we aimed to explore the possible role of polymorphisms in the promoter region of the macrophage elastase gene MMP12 82A>G (rs2276109) as a predisposing factor for BA in an ethnic Bulgarian population. Using restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of polymerase chain reaction-amplified fragments (PCR-RFLP), we performed genotype analysis of 58 patients and 119 control individuals. We found statistically significant differences in the distribution of genotypes (P = .008) and alleles (P = .004) between patients and nonaffected controls. In the dominant model, carriers of the G allele genotypes had 3.6-fold lower risk for BA, compared with those with the AA genotype, after adjustment for age and sex (odds ratio [OR], -0.277; 95% confidence interval [CI], .12-.65; P = .003). The results of our study suggest that the variant G allele of the MMP12 -82 A>G promoter polymorphism might be considered protective for development of BA in ethnic Bulgarian adults residing in central Bulgaria.
