Abstract: ObjectiveaaWe developed a Korean version of Mini-Mental Status Examination (MMSE) optimized for screening dementia (MMSE-DS) and its’ short form (SMMSE-DS). MethodsaaWe constructed the MMSE-DS using the items of the two current Korean versions of MMSE and then construct the SMMSE-DS consisted of 13 items from the MMSEDS based on the diagnostic accuracy of individual items for dementia. We investigated reliability and validity of MMSE-DS and SMMSE-DS on 1,555 subjects (1,222 nondemented controls, 333 dementia patients). We compared the diagnostic accuracy of the SMMSE-DS with that of the three full Korean versions of MMSE, and examined its’ age- and education-specific optimal cutoff scores for dementia. ResultsaaThe internal consistency obtained by Cronbach’s coefficient alpha was 0.826. The inter-rater reliability and test-retest reliability were 0.968 (p<0.001) and 0.825 (p<0.001), respectively. It showed significant correlation with the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) (r=-0.698, p<0.05) and the three full Korean versions of MMSE (r=0.839-0.938, p<0.001). The area under the receiver operator curve for dementia of the SMMSE-DS was larger than those of the three full Korean versions of MMSE (p<0.001). Age, education and gender explained 19.4% of the total variance of SMMSE-DS scores. The optimal cutoff scores for dementia of the SMMSE-DS were estimated differently by age and educational attainment of the subjects. ConclusionaaThe SMMSE-DS was found to be accurate, brief and portable instrument for screening dementia in Korean elders, and may be particularly useful for screening dementia in elderly populations with wide variation in educational levels. Abstract: Seasonal variation in species composition around Dokdo, East Sea of Korea, was investigated using trammel-net catches, from 2006 to 2009. A total of 53 fish species belonging to 23 families in 12 orders were captured; the orders Perciformes (12 families, 22 species) and Scorpaeniformes (four families, 22 species) were dominant. Between 2008 and 2009, 43 species were collected by trammel net. The number of species was highest in August 2009 (25 species) and lowest in February 2009 (11 species). The number of individuals and total biomass peaked in November 2009. Diversity indices for fish catches were highest in August 2008 (2.4368) and lowest in November 2009 (0.4253). The dominant species were Thamnaconus modestus and Sebastes schlegeli. Hierarchical clustering analysis showed five fish groups, with frequency and number of individuals similar to results of correspondence analysis (CA), which showed a closer relationship to the year term than the season term. CA showed that temperature was an important factor influencing fish species richness and abundance. Three main fish assemblage types coexisted around Dokdo: an East Sea coastal fish assemblage, a subtropical fish assemblage, and a cold water fish assemblage.

Abstract: Two penaeoid shrimps, Hadropenaeus lucasii (Bate, 1881) and Sicyonia truncata (Kubo, 1949), were collected from the northeastern waters of Jeju Island, Korea. These represent the only Korean reports of a member of the genus Hadropenaeus, family Solenoceridae and of a member of family Sicyonidae, respectively. Morphological descriptions and illustrations with a color photograph of each species are given. Korean Penaeoidea presently includes 27 species in three families.

Abstract: Background: Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) describes cognitive impairment that does not meet criteria for dementia, and includes memory (amnestic) and non-memory (eg executive, language, visuospatial) types. Diagnostic criteria also includes no significant functional decline, but recent studies suggest subtle deficits often exist. The objective of this study was to investigate the level and type of functional impairment in MCI patients, by amnestic versus non-amnestic subtype. Methods: We studied 498 patients with MCI, evaluated at the California Alzheimer’s Research and Care Centers (ARCC) between 2006 and 2009. All patients had multidisciplinary evaluations by experts, including comprehensive neurological examination and neuropsychological testing. Patients with significant deficits in at least one cognitive domain who did not meet DSM IV criteria for dementia were defined as MCI (amnestic versus non-amnestic). Function was assessed using the Blessed Roth Dementia Rating Scale (BRDRS, range 0-17 for total score, higher being more impaired). Results: The mean participant age was 75.4 years, 50.7% were female, 81.7% were white, 78.7% (n 1⁄4 392) had amnestic and 21.3% (n 1⁄4 106) non-amnestic MCI. Amnestic and nonamnestic patients had similar total BRDRS scores (1.6 6 1.8 points vs. 1.5 6 2.1, respectively, p 1⁄4 0.84) and MMSE scores (26.5 6 2.9 vs. 26.7 6 3.0, p 1⁄4 0.60). However, amnestic patients were more likely to have difficulty remembering lists, recent events, and dwelling in the past (p < 0.05 for all) compared to non-amnestic. Non-amnestic patients were more likely to have difficulty eating, dressing, and with continence (p < 0.05 for all). Conclusions: Despite the MCI diagnostic criteria suggesting no functional impairment, these results indicate that patients with MCI are experiencing mild functional deficits which vary according to the type of MCI.
