Beyond the unprecedented success achieved in photovoltaics (PVs), lead halide perovskites (LHPs) have shown great potential in other optoelectronic devices. Among them, nanometer-scale perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) with fascinating optical properties including high brightness, tunable emission wavelength, high color purity, and high defect tolerance have been regarded as promising alternative down-conversion materials in phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (pc-LEDs) for lighting and next-generation of display technology. Despite the promising applications of perovskite materials in various fields, they have received strong criticism for the lack of stability. The poor stability has also attracted much attention. Within a few years, numerous strategies towards enhancing the stability have been developed. This review summarizes the mechanisms of intrinsic- and extrinsic-environment-induced decomposition of PQDs. Simultaneously, the strategies for improving the stability of PQDs are reviewed in detail, which can be classified into four types: (1) compositional engineering; (2) surface engineering; (3) matrix encapsulation; (4) device encapsulation. Finally, the challenges for applying PQDs in pc-LEDs are highlighted, and some possible solutions to improve the stability of PQDs together with suggestions for further improving the performance of pc-LEDs as well as the device lifetime are provided.

An overview on enhancing the stability of lead halide perovskite quantum dots and their applications in phosphor-converted LEDs

Photovoltaic solar cells based on metal halide perovskites have gained considerable attention over the past decade because of their potentially low production cost, earth-abundant raw materials, ease of fabrication and ever-increasing power conversion efficiencies of up to 25.2%. This type of solar cells offers the promise of generating electricity at a more competitive unit price than traditional fossil fuels by 2035. Nevertheless, the best research cell efficiencies are still below the theoretical limit defined by the Shockley-Queissier theory owing to the presence of non-radiative recombination losses. In this Review, we analyse the predominant pathways that contribute to non-radiative recombination losses in perovskite solar cells, and evaluate their impact on device performance. We then discuss how non-radiative recombination losses can be estimated through reliable characterization techniques, and highlight some notable advances in mitigating these losses, which hint at pathways towards defect-free perovskite solar cells. Finally, we outline directions for future work that will push the efficiency of perovskite solar cells towards the radiative limit.

Minimizing non-radiative recombination losses in perovskite solar cells

All-inorganic perovskite solar cells provide a promising solution to tackle the thermal instability problem of organic–inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, we designed an all-inorganic perovskite solar cell with novel structure (FTO/NiOx/CsPbI2Br/ZnO@C60/Ag), in which ZnO@C60 bilayer was utilized as the electron-transporting layers that demonstrated high carrier extraction efficiency and low leakage loss. Consequently, the as-fabricated all-inorganic CsPbI2Br perovskite solar cell yielded a power conversion efficiency (PCE) as high as 13.3% with a Voc of 1.14 V, Jsc of 15.2 mA·cm–2, and FF of 0.77. The corresponding stabilized power output (SPO) of the device was demonstrated to be ∼12% and remarkably stable within 1000 s. Importantly, the obtained all-inorganic PSCs without encapsulation exhibited only 20% PCE loss with thermal treatment at 85 °C for 360 h, which largely outperformed the organic-species-containing PSCs. All-Inorganic CsPbI2Br Perovskite Solar Cells with High Efficiency Exceeding 13%

Inorganic halide perovskites (IHPs) have recently attracted huge attention in the field of optoelectronics. IHPs are generally expected to exhibit superior chemical stability over the prevailing hybrid organic–inorganic perovskites that are widely used in optoelectronic devices such as solar cells and light-emitting devices. This is primarily owing to the elimination of weakly-bonded organic components in the IHP crystal structure. Nevertheless, many recent studies have revealed that IHPs still suffer significant issues in chemical instability, and thus, a lot of effort has been made towards the stabilization of IHPs for high-performance devices. In this context, a great deal of interest in the chemistry and perovskite community has been emerging to understand the chemical (in)stability of IHPs and develop engineering strategies for making more robust perovskite devices. This review will summarize the past research progress in this direction, give insights into the IHP (in)stability, and provide perspectives for the future effort in making stable IHP materials and devices.

Chemical stability and instability of inorganic halide perovskites

Over the last several years, inorganic–organic hybrid perovskites have shown dramatic achievements in photovoltaic performance and device stability. Despite the significant progress in photovoltaic application, an in-depth understanding of the fundamentals of precursor solution chemistry is still lacking. In this review, the fundamental background knowledge of nucleation and crystal growth processes in solution including the LaMer model and Ostwald ripening process is described. This review article also highlights the recent progress in precursor-coordinating molecule interaction in solution along with the role of anti-solvent in the solvent engineering process to control nucleation and crystal growth. Moreover, chemical pathways from precursor solution to perovskite film formation are given. This represents identification of the intermediate phase induced by precursor-coordinating molecule interaction and responsible intermediate species for uniform and dense perovskite film formation. Further to the description of chemical phenomena in solution, the contemporary progress in chemical precursor composition is also provided to comprehend the current research approaches to further enhance photovoltaic performance and device stability. On the basis of the critical and comprehensive review, we provide some perspectives to further achieve high-performance perovskite solar cells with long-term device stability through precisely controlled nucleation and crystal growth in precursor solution.

Perovskite precursor solution chemistry: from fundamentals to photovoltaic applications.

As the black cesium lead iodide (CsPbI3) tends to transit into a yellow δ-phase at ambient, it is imperative to develop a stabilized black phase for photovoltaic applications. Herein, we report a distorted black CsPbI3 film by exploiting the synergistic effect of hydroiodic acid (HI) and phenylethylammonium iodide (PEAI) additives. It is found that the HI induces formation of hydrogen lead iodide (HPbI3+x), an intermediate to the distorted black phase with appropriate band gap of 1.69 eV; while PEAI provides nucleation for optimized crystallization. More importantly, it stabilizes the distorted black phase by hindering phase transition via its steric effects. Upon optimization, we have attained solar cell efficiency as high as 15.07%. Specifically, the bare cell without any encapsulation shows negligible efficiency loss after 300 h of light soaking. The device keeps 92% of its initial cell efficiency after being stored for 2 months under ambient conditions.

All-inorganic cesium lead iodide perovskite solar cells with stabilized efficiency beyond 15

It is imperative to develop a large-aspect-ratio grain-based thin film with low trap density for high-performance inorganic perovskite CsPbI2Br solar cells. Herein, by using Mn2+ ion doping to modulate film growth, we achieved CsPbI2Br grains with aspect ratios as high as 8. It is found that Mn2+ ions insert into the interstices of the CsPbI2Br lattice during the growth process, leading to suppressed nucleation and a decreased growth rate. The combination aids in the achievement of larger CsPbI2Br crystalline grains for increased JSC values as high as 14.37 mA/cm2 and FFs as large as 80.0%. Moreover, excess Mn2+ ions passivate the grain boundary and surface defects, resulting in effectively decreased recombination loss with improved hole extraction efficiency, which enhances the built-in electric field and hence increases VOC to 1.172 V. As a result, the champion device achieves stabilized efficiency as high as 13.47%, improved by 13% compared with only 11.88% for the reference device.
