Journal ArticleDOI
Rib fractures in the elderly.
TL;DR: Elderly patients who sustain blunt chest trauma with rib fxs have twice the mortality and thoracic morbidity of younger patients with similar injuries, and a significant increase in morbidity and mortality in both groups, but with different patterns for each group.
Journal ArticleDOI
Skeletal muscle predicts ventilator-free days, ICU-free days, and mortality in elderly ICU patients.
Lesley L. Moisey,Marina Mourtzakis,Bryan A. Cotton,Bryan A. Cotton,Tahira Premji,Daren K. Heyland,Charles E. Wade,Charles E. Wade,Eileen M. Bulger,Rosemary A. Kozar +9 more
TL;DR: Sarcopenia is highly prevalent in the elderly population with traumatic injuries and represents a potential new predictor for mortality, discharge disposition, and ICU utilization, according to traditional measures of nutritional assessment.
Journal ArticleDOI
Antioxidants in critical illness
Eileen M. Bulger,Ronald V. Maier +1 more
TL;DR: Antioxidant therapies reviewed include N-acetylcysteine, selenium, vitamins E and C, superoxide dismutase, catalase, lazaroids, and allopurinol.
Journal ArticleDOI
Joint statement from the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS COT) and the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) regarding the clinical use of Resuscitative Endovascular Balloon Occlusion of the Aorta (REBOA).
Megan Brenner,Eileen M. Bulger,Debra G. Perina,Sharon Henry,Christopher Kang,Michael F. Rotondo,Michael C. Chang,Leonard J. Weireter,Michael Coburn,Robert J. Winchell,Ronald M. Stewart +10 more
TL;DR: This joint policy statement addresses the current practice relevant to patient indications, potential complications, implementation, patient management, and training of providers, and urges trauma centers to consider these factors in the adoption of REBOA.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hypertonic resuscitation of hypovolemic shock after blunt trauma: a randomized controlled trial.
Eileen M. Bulger,Gregory J. Jurkovich,Avery B. Nathens,Michael K. Copass,Sandy Hanson,Claudette Cooper,Ping Yu Liu,Margaret J. Neff,Asaad B. Awan,Keir J. Warner,Ronald V. Maier +10 more
TL;DR: Although no significant difference in ARDS-free survival was demonstrated overall, there was benefit in the subgroup of patients requiring 10 U or more of packed red blood cells in the first 24 hours, suggesting Massive transfusion may be a better predictor of ARDS than prehospital hypotension.
