TL;DR: Large-scale surveillance of possibly artemisinin-resistant parasites in Africa would provide useful information about treatment outcomes and help regional malaria control.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sensitive, Specific, and Rapid Detection of Leishmania donovani DNA by Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification
Hidekazu Takagi,Makoto Itoh,Mohammad Zahidul Islam,Abdur Razzaque,A. R. M. Saifuddin Ekram,Yoshihisa Hashighuchi,Eisei Noiri,Eisaku Kimura +7 more
TL;DR: The LAMP technique detected 1 fg of L. donovani DNA, which was 10-fold more sensitive than a conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and can be a better alternative to a conventional PCR, especially under field conditions.
Journal ArticleDOI

Ayako Sakakibara,Kenji Baba,Sayaka Niwa,Takeo Yagi,Hideo Wakayama,Kazuhito Yoshida,Tadashi Kobayashi,Takio Yokoi,Kazuo Hara,Makoto Itoh,Eisaku Kimura +10 more
TL;DR: A 32-year-old man presented with the chief complaint of severe cough and visceral larva migrans due to Ascaris suum was diagnosed, illustrating the importance of constant attention to the epidemiology of this disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
Direct agglutination test with urine samples for the diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis.
Mohammad Zahidul Islam,Makoto Itoh,Rusella Mirza,Iftikhar Ahmed,A. R. M. Saifuddin Ekram,Abdul Halim Sarder,S. M. Shamsuzzaman,Yoshihisa Hashiguchi,Eisaku Kimura +8 more
TL;DR: A new direct agglutination test (DAT) for use with urine samples for the diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) has been developed and compared with the conventional DAT with serum samples and the previously reported enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with urine data.
