Mortality of Wood Warbler Phylloscopus sibilatrix nests in Welsh Oakwoods: predation rates and the identification of nest predators using miniature nest cameras
John W. Mallord,Christopher J. Orsman,Andrew Cristinacce,Nigel Butcher,Tim J. Stowe,Elisabeth C. Charman +5 more
TL;DR: Nest predation rates were similar in both periods, suggesting that increased rates of nest predation have not been driving the decline of the Wood Warbler population in Wales.
Journal ArticleDOI
Large-scale variation in the temporal patterns of the frass fall of defoliating caterpillars in oak woodlands in Britain: implications for nesting woodland birds
Ken W. Smith,Linda Smith,Elisabeth C. Charman,Kevin Briggs,Malcolm D. Burgess,Chris Dennis,Matt Harding,Catherine Isherwood,Isabel Isherwood,John W. Mallord +9 more
TL;DR: The date of peak frass fall was later and the duration of the peak longer in the north and west of Britain compared with the southeast which will have considerable implications for nesting woodland birds such as Pied Flycatchers.
Journal ArticleDOI
Recent patterns of change in vegetation structure and tree composition of British broadleaved woodland: evidence from large-scale surveys
Arjun Amar,Ken W. Smith,Simon J. Butler,Jeremy A. Lindsell,Chris M. Hewson,Robert J. Fuller,Elisabeth C. Charman +6 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present evidence of widespread changes in structure and species composition between the 1980s and 2003-2004 from surveys of 249 British broadleaved woodlands, including canopy cover, vertical vegetation profiles, field-layer cover and deadwood abundance.
Journal ArticleDOI
Diet flexibility in a declining long-distance migrant may allow it to escape the consequences of phenological mismatch with its caterpillar food supply
John W. Mallord,Christopher J. Orsman,Andrew Cristinacce,Tim J. Stowe,Elisabeth C. Charman,Richard D. Gregory +5 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that the lack of a marked effect of the observed mismatch is due to Wood Warblers’ generalist diet, enabling them to breed successfully on prey other than caterpillars, thus highlighting the importance of investigating the generality of those findings.
Journal ArticleDOI
A participatory process for identifying and prioritizing policy-relevant research questions in natural resource management: a case study from the uk forestry sector
Gillian Petrokofsky,Nicholas D. Brown,Gabriel Hemery,Steve Woodward,Edward R. Wilson,Andrew Weatherall,Victoria Stokes,Richard J. Smithers,Marcus Sangster,Karen Russell,Andrew S. Pullin,Colin Price,Michael D. Morecroft,Mark Malins,Anna Lawrence,Keith Kirby,Douglas L. Godbold,Elisabeth C. Charman,David Boshier,Sasha Bosbeer,J. E. Michael Arnold +20 more
TL;DR: The Top Ten Questions for Forestry (T10Q) project as discussed by the authors investigated a process for compiling and prioritizing a meaningful set of research questions, which were considered by participating stakeholders to have high policy relevance, using a collaborative bottom-up approach involving professionals from a wide set of disciplines of relevance to modern forestry.
