The perovskite structure—a review of its role in ceramic science and technology

Calcium oxalate (CaOx) crystals are distributed among all taxonomic levels of photosynthetic organisms from small algae to angiosperms and giant gymnosperms. Accumulation of crystals by these organisms can be substantial. Major functions of CaOx crystal formation in plants include high-capacity calcium (Ca) regulation and protection against herbivory. Ultrastructural and developmental analyses have demonstrated that this biomineralization process is not a simple random physical-chemical precipitation of endogenously synthesized oxalic acid and environmentally derived Ca. Instead, crystals are formed in specific shapes and sizes. Genetic regulation of CaOx formation is indicated by constancy of crystal morphology within species, cell specialization, and the remarkable coordination of crystal growth and cell expansion. Using a variety of approaches, researchers have begun to unravel the exquisite control mechanisms exerted by cells specialized for CaOx formation that include the machinery for uptake and accumulation of Ca, oxalic acid biosynthetic pathways, and regulation of crystal growth.

Molecular mechanism mediating proliferation, defferentiation interralationships during progressie development of the osteoblast phenotype

Chitin, the second most important natural polymer in the world, and its N-deacetylated derivative chitosan, have been identified as versatile biopolymers for a broad range of applications in medicine, agriculture and the food industry. Two of the main reasons for this are firstly the unique chemical, physicochemical and biological properties of chitin and chitosan, and secondly the unlimited supply of raw materials for their production. These polymers exhibit widely differing physicochemical properties depending on the chitin source and the conditions of chitosan production. The presence of reactive functional groups as well as the polysaccharide nature of these biopolymers enables them to undergo diverse chemical modifications. A complete chemical and physicochemical characterization of chitin, chitosan and their derivatives is not possible without using spectroscopic techniques. This review focuses on the application of spectroscopic methods for the structural analysis of these compounds.

The thermal behaviour of Auranofin, one of the best established gold containing drugs, has been investigated by thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis under an oxygen flow. A detailed decomposition mechanism could be postulated. Elemental gold is the final pyrolysis product. RESUMEN. "Comportamiento termico de la Auranofina". El comportamiento termico de la Auranofina, uno de los farmacos a base de oro mejor conocidos, fue investigado por analisis termogravimetrico y termico-diferencial, en corriente de oxigeno. Fue posible postular un mecanismo detallado para la descomposicion. El producto final de la pirolisis es oro elemental.

La nueva farmacoterapia inorganica. Vi. Algunos comentarios acerca de las deficiencias de zinc y su tratamiento

The cytotoxicity activity of the recently reported [VO(H2O)2(SO4)dppz]iÂÂÂÂ2H2O complex (dppz = dipyrido[3,2-a:2ÂÂÂ,3ÂÂÂ- c]phenazine) on MG-63 human osteosarcoma cell line was investigated. It was found that it caused a concentration related inhibitory effect in the concentration range between 5 and 25 iÂÂ­Mand diminished the cell viability ca. 40% in the range from 25 to 100 iM, without dose/response effects in this range. These biological effects are, in general, similar to those previously reported for the related [VO(ODA)dppz]iÂÂÂÂ3H2O (ODA= dianion of oxodiacetic acid) and [VO(ODA)(phen)]iÂÂÂÂ1.5H2O (phen = ophenanthroline) complexes. The importance of the presence of DNAintercalating ligands in these complexes is emphasized.

Cytotoxicity action of an oxidovanadium(IV)-DPPZ complex on MG-63 human osteosarcoma cell line

Crystal data for Mg3V10O28.28H2O were determined from oscillation, Weissenberg and precession photographs using Cu Kα radiation (λ = 1.54178 A). The substance is triclinic, space group P{\bar 1}, Z = 2, and lattice constants a = 10.53 (5), b = 10.73 (6), c = 21.28 (9) A, α = 90.2(1), β = 97.5(2) and γ = 104.1(3)°, V = 2310 (25) A3 and the measured and calculated densities are 2.17(10) and 2.20 Mg m−3, respectively. The crystals were also characterized by TG/DTA measurements and vibrational spectroscopy.
