Scenarios for global biodiversity in the 21st Century
Henrique M. Pereira,Paul Leadley,Vania Proenca,Rob Alkemade,Joern P. W. Scharlemann,Juan F. Fernández-Manjarrés,Miguel B. Araújo,Miguel B. Araújo,Patricia Balvanera,Reinette Biggs,William W. L. Cheung,Louise Chini,H. David Cooper,Eric Gilman,Sylvie Guénette,George C. Hurtt,George C. Hurtt,Henry P. Huntington,Georgina M. Mace,Thierry Oberdorff,Carmen Revenga,Patrícia Rodrigues,Robert J. Scholes,Ussif Rashid Sumaila,Matt Walpole +24 more
TL;DR: Scenarios consistently indicate that biodiversity will continue to decline over the 21st century, however, the range of projected changes is much broader than most studies suggest, partly because there are major opportunities to intervene through better policies, but also because of large uncertainties in projections.
Journal ArticleDOI
Threats to mangroves from climate change and adaptation options: A review
TL;DR: In this article, the authors review the state of knowledge of mangrove vulnerability and responses to predicted climate change and consider adaptation options, based on available evidence, of all the climate change outcomes, relative sea level rise may be the greatest threat to mangroves.
Journal ArticleDOI
Shark interactions in pelagic longline fisheries
Eric Gilman,Eric Gilman,Shelley Clarke,Joanna Alfaro-Shigueto,John W. Mandelman,Jeffrey C. Mangel,Samantha L. Petersen,Susanna Piovano,Nicola Thomson,Paul Dalzell,Miguel Donoso,Meidad Goren,Timothy B. Werner +12 more
TL;DR: Development of specifically designed equipment to discard sharks could improve shark post release survival prospects, reduce gear loss and improve crew safety, and information on fisher knowledge and new strategies for shark avoidance may benefit sharks and fishers.
Journal ArticleDOI
Reducing sea turtle by-catch in pelagic longline fisheries
Eric Gilman,Erika Zollett,Stephen Beverly,Hideki Nakano,Kimberly Davis,Daisuke Shiode,Paul Dalzell,Irene Kinan +7 more
TL;DR: Research on strategies to reduce sea turtle by-catch is reviewed, finding the effectiveness and commercialviability of turtle avoidance strategies may be fishery-specific, depending on the size and target species of turtles and targetfish, and other differences betweenfleets.
Journal ArticleDOI
Bycatch governance and best practice mitigation technology in global tuna fisheries
TL;DR: There has been substantial progress in identifying gear technology solutions to seabird and sea turtle bycatch on longlines and to direct dolphin mortality in purse seines and pelagic longline tuna fisheries as discussed by the authors.
