Journal ArticleDOI
Biosynthesis of very-long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in transgenic oilseeds: constraints on their accumulation.
Amine Abbadi,Freéderic Domergue,Joerg Bauer,Johnathan A. Napier,Ruth Welti,Ulrich Zähringer,Petra Cirpus,Ernst Heinz +7 more
TL;DR: The successful production of VLCPUFA in transgenic oilseeds and the identification of constraints on their accumulation are indicated, which indicate alternative strategies to circumvent this bottleneck.
Journal ArticleDOI
Defensins from Insects and Plants Interact with Fungal Glucosylceramides
Karin Thevissen,Dirk Warnecke,Isabelle E.J.A. François,Martina Leipelt,Ernst Heinz,Claudia Ott,Ulrich Zähringer,Bart P. H. J. Thomma,Kathelijne K.A. Ferket,Bruno P. A. Cammue +9 more
TL;DR: Structurally homologous anti-fungal peptides present in species from different eukaryotic kingdoms interact with the same target in the fungal plasma membrane, namely glucosylceramides, and as such support the hypothesis that defensins from plants and insects have evolved from a single precursor.
Journal ArticleDOI
Stepwise engineering to produce high yields of very long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in plants
Guohai Wu,Martin Truksa,Nagamani Datla,Patricia Vrinten,Joerg Bauer,Thorsten K. Zank,Thorsten K. Zank,Petra Cirpus,Ernst Heinz,Xiao Qiu +9 more
TL;DR: The transgenic production of significant amounts of AA and EPA in Brassica juncea seeds via a stepwise metabolic engineering strategy is reported, demonstrating the practical feasibility of large-scale production of this important ω-3 fatty acid in oilseed crops.
Journal ArticleDOI
The evolution of desaturases.
TL;DR: All enzymes able to activate oxygen and to use this reagent for a subsequent modification of C–H bonds at saturated or monounsaturated carbons in substrates as diverse as alkyl groups, acyl residues in thio-, amideor oxygen-ester linkage, carotenoids, sphingolipids, aldehydes and sterols are considered.
Journal ArticleDOI
Similarities and differences in lipid metabolism of chloroplasts isolated from 18:3 and 16:3 plants.
Ernst Heinz,P. Grattan Roughan +1 more
TL;DR: Results provide further evidence on an organellar level for the operation of pro- and eucaryotic pathways in the biosynthesis of MGD in different groups of plants.
