The Theory of Island Biogeography

Microalgal biovolume is commonly calculated to assess the relative abundance (as biomass or carbon) of co-occurring algae varying in shape and/or size. However, a standardized set of equations for biovolume calculations from microscopically measured linear dimensions that includes the entire range of microalgal shapes is not available yet. In comparison with automated methods, the use of microscopical measurements allows high taxonomic resolution, up to the species level, and has fewer sources of error. We present a set of geometric shapes and mathematical equations for calculating biovolumes of >850 pelagic and benthic marine and freshwater microalgal genera. The equations are designed to minimize the effort of microscopic measurement. The similarities and differences between our proposal for standardization and previously published proposals are discussed and recommendations for quality standards given.

Biovolume calculation for pelagic and benthic microalgae

In the Anthropocene, in which we now live, climate change is impacting most life on Earth. Microorganisms support the existence of all higher trophic life forms. To understand how humans and other life forms on Earth (including those we are yet to discover) can withstand anthropogenic climate change, it is vital to incorporate knowledge of the microbial 'unseen majority'. We must learn not just how microorganisms affect climate change (including production and consumption of greenhouse gases) but also how they will be affected by climate change and other human activities. This Consensus Statement documents the central role and global importance of microorganisms in climate change biology. It also puts humanity on notice that the impact of climate change will depend heavily on responses of microorganisms, which are essential for achieving an environmentally sustainable future.

Scientists' Warning to Humanity: Microorganisms and Climate Change

Phytoplankton biovolume can be measured or calculated through the calculation of similar geometric models. A set of geometric models is suggested for calculating cell biovolume and surface area for 284 phytoplankton genera in China Sea waters. Thirty-one geometric shapes have been assigned to estimate the biovolume and surface area of phytoplankton cells. Reductions of error and microscopic effort are also discussed. The model has been verified by its application in the China Seas regions. The software to make these calculations is available at http://www.ouc.edu.cn/csmxy/sunjun/ biovolume.htm.

Geometric models for calculating cell biovolume and surface area for phytoplankton

1. Using data from 71, mainly shallow (an average mean depth of 3 m), Danish lakes with contrasting total phosphorus concentrations (summer mean 0.02–1.0 mg P L−l), we describe how species richness, biodiversity and trophic structure change along a total phosphorus (TP) gradient divided into five TP classes (class 1–5: 0.4 mg P L−1). 
2. With increasing TP, a significant decline was observed in the species richness of zooplankton and submerged macrophytes, while for fish, phytoplankton and floating-leaved macrophytes, species richness was unimodally related to TP, all peaking at 0.1–0.4 mg P L−1. The Shannon–Wiener and the Hurlbert probability of inter-specific encounter (PIE) diversity indices showed significant unimodal relationships to TP for zooplankton, phytoplankton and fish. Mean depth also contributed positively to the relationship for rotifers, phytoplankton and fish. 
3. At low nutrient concentrations, piscivorous fish (particularly perch, Perca fluviatilis) were abundant and the biomass ratio of piscivores to plankti-benthivorous cyprinids was high and the density of cyprinids low. Concurrently, the zooplankton was dominated by large-bodied forms and the biomass ratio of zooplankton to phytoplankton and the calculated grazing pressure on phytoplankton were high. Phytoplankton biomass was low and submerged macrophyte abundance high. 
4. With increasing TP, a major shift occurred in trophic structure. Catches of cyprinids in multiple mesh size gill nets increased 10-fold from class 1 to class 5 and the weight ratio of piscivores to planktivores decreased from 0.6 in class 1 to 0.10–0.15 in classes 3–5. In addition, the mean body weight of dominant cyprinids (roach, Rutilus rutilus, and bream, Abramis brama) decreased two–threefold. Simultaneously, small cladocerans gradually became more important, and among copepods, a shift occurred from calanoid to cyclopoids. Mean body weight of cladocerans decreased from 5.1 μg in class 1 to 1.5 μg in class 5, and the biomass ratio of zooplankton to phytoplankton from 0.46 in class 1 to 0.08–0.15 in classes 3–5. Conversely, phytoplankton biomass and chlorophyll a increased 15-fold from class 1 to 5 and submerged macrophytes disappeared from most lakes. 
5. The suggestion that fish have a significant structuring role in eutrophic lakes is supported by data from three lakes in which major changes in the abundance of planktivorous fish occurred following fish kill or fish manipulation. In these lakes, studied for 8 years, a reduction in planktivores resulted in a major increase in cladoceran mean size and in the biomass ratio of zooplankton to phytoplankton, while chlorophyll a declined substantially. In comparison, no significant changes were observed in 33 ‘control’ lakes studied during the same period.

Trophic structure, species richness and biodiversity in Danish lakes: changes along a phosphorus gradient

Phytoplankton samples from 7 different lakes were processed in 2 intercalibration series using Utermohl's sedimentation method. Total biomass volumes obtained by most of the investigators give reliable results in respect to the mean. Numbers of individuals and mean volumes of selected species obtained by the different participants were compared and show larger variations than the overall results. Therefore a certain delimitation of particular sources of errors was tried in the 2nd intercalibration series by giving recommendations for the different steps of the whole procedure.

Many methods for using diatoms for routine monitoring of water quality have been developed in Europe and, in some countries, these are being used to enforce environmental legislation. In order to facilitate their wider use, particularly with respect to European Union legislation, steps are being taken to harmonize methodology. In this paper, the principles and practice of sampling are described in relation to the main habitat types encountered in Europe. Although details of methods and sampling programmes have to be tailored to particular circumstances and the overall objectives of the monitoring, a number of generalizations can be made. Where available, rocks and other hard surfaces are the preferred substrates and methods for sampling these are described. If such substrata are not available, then introduced ('artificial') substrata have many applications. Various types of introduced substrata can be used successfully, so long as some basic precautions are described. Other types of substrata such as macrophytes and macroalgae may also be useful under certain circumstances, although there is less consensus in the literature on the most appropriate methods, and of the validity of comparisons between indices computed from epiphytic and epilithic communities. When designing surveys, it is recommended that as far as possible, extremes of non-water quality factors (e.g. shade, current speed, etc) are avoided, unless these are characteristic of the system under investigation. Detailed guidelines for sampling epilithon are described. Along with the recommendations for sampling other substrata, it is hoped that these provide a framework that can be adapted to most river types in Europe.

Monitoring organic pollution and eutrophication in the Grand River, Ontario, by means of diatoms

This is a review on benthic algae from streams situated above the tree line in the Alps. It integrates published and unpublished data from alpine streams in Austria and in the Trento Province (Northern Italy). The main focus is on the structural and taxonomic composition of benthic algae including macro- and micro-algae and their contribution to the epilithic biofilm and the stream food-web. The environmental conditions relevant to algae within the two major stream types, the glacial (glacier-fed) and non-glacial krenal (spring-fed) stream are discussed. The paper considers both the maximum possible structural complexity of transverse algae zonation in cascading alpine/subalpine stream segments, and the effects of glacial water on species richness in the Central Alps in Austria. Autecological data are given for 46 common diatoms from 42 sites in the Central Eastern and Southern Central Alps and for 30 algae in addition to diatoms for 22 streams in the Central Eastern Alps. Since data on responses of benthic algae to the harsh conditions in high altitude Alpine streams are very scarce, results from literature and the author’s experiences from these and other mountain stream types are synthesized to formulate major objectives for future research in benthic high altitude Alpine stream ecology.
