This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. A review on stereolithography and its applications in biomedical engineering

Because of the environmental and economic casualties of biofouling on maritime navigation, modern studies have been devoted toward formulating advanced nanoscale composites in the controlled development of effective marine antifouling self-cleaning surfaces. Natural biomimetic surfaces have the advantages of micro-/nanoroughness and minimized free energy characteristics that can motivate the dynamic fabrication of superhydrophobic antifouling surfaces. This review provides an architectural panorama of the biomimetic antifouling designs and their key leverages to broaden horizons in the controlled fabrication of nanocomposite building blocks as force-driven marine antifouling models. As primary antifouling designs, understanding the key functions of surface geometry, heterogeneity, superhydrophobicity, and complexity of polymer/nanofiller composite building blocks on fouling-resistant systems is crucial. This review also discusses a wide range of fouling release coating systems that satisfy the growing demand in a sustainable future environment. For instance, the integration of block, segmented copolymer-based coatings and inorganic-organic hybrid nanofillers enhanced the model's antifouling properties with mechanical, superhydrophobic, chemically inert, and robust surfaces. These nanoscale antifouling systems offered surfaces with minimized free energy, micro-/nanoroughness, anisotropic heterogeneity, superior hydrophobicity, tunable non-wettability, antibacterial efficiency, and mechanical robustness. The confined fabrication of nanoscale orientation, configuration, arrangement, and direction along the architectural composite building blocks would yield excellent air-entrapping ability along the interfacial surface grooves and interfaces, which optimized the antifouling coating surfaces for long-term durability. This review provides systematic evidence of the effect of structurally folded nanocomposites, nanofiller tectonics, and building blocks on the creation of outstanding superhydrophobicity, self-cleaning surfaces, and potential antifouling coatings. The development of modern research gateways is a candidate for the sustainable future of antifouling coatings.

Progress in biomimetic leverages for marine antifouling using nanocomposite coatings

A thin sheet of nematic elastomer attains 3D configurations depending on the nematic director field upon heating. In this Letter, we describe the intrinsic geometry of such a sheet and derive an expression for the metric induced by general nematic director fields. Furthermore, we investigate the reverse problem of constructing a director field that induces a specified 2D geometry. We provide an explicit recipe for how to construct any surface of revolution using this method. Finally, we show that by inscribing a director field gradient across the sheet's thickness, one can obtain a nontrivial hyperbolic reference curvature tensor, which together with the prescription of a reference metric allows dictation of actual configurations for a thin sheet of nematic elastomer.

Geometry of Thin Nematic Elastomer Sheets

Degradable polymers are used widely in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Maturing capabilities in additive manufacturing coupled with advances in orthogonal chemical functionalization methodologies have enabled a rapid evolution of defect-specific form factors and strategies for designing and creating bioactive scaffolds. However, these defect-specific scaffolds, especially when utilizing degradable polymers as the base material, present processing challenges that are distinct and unique from other classes of materials. The goal of this review is to provide a guide for the fabrication of biodegradable polymer-based scaffolds that includes the complete pathway starting from selecting materials, choosing the correct fabrication method, and considering the requirements for tissue specific applications of the scaffold.

Fabrication of Biomedical Scaffolds Using Biodegradable Polymers.

Failure happens in composites after prolonged degradation process due to micro cracks. Thereafter repairing is not possible at remote locations in the way to enhance reliability and endurance of composites. Self-healing composites are fabricated to heal cracks and damages if there will be any to restrict failure and enhance the longevity of structures. Therefore, maintenance task is quite simplified. This review aims to provide summarized information on the recent developments in the field of self-healing composites. Initially, fabrication and characterization techniques have been reviewed as much as possible for self-healing carbon fiber laminates, microcapsules containing rejuvenator along with graphene/hexamethoxymethylmelamine (HMMM) hybrid shells and supramolecular elastomer. This paper also outlines numerical methods in its middle section to explore functionality recoveries in self-healing composites and to study improvement in mechanical properties of these smart composites. Thereafter, applications of shape memory alloy and shape memory polymer in advanced CNTs reinforced self-healing composites are also discussed. Composite material with carbon nanotube sheets (CNS) is discussed as sustainable self-healing material as it can maintain its temperature-similar to living species. Future application will be based on these smart self-healing composites and thus it becomes important to us to compile this review article.

Self-healing composites: A state-of-the-art review

4D printed objects are indexed under additive manufacturing (AM) objects. The 4D printed materials are stimulus-responsive and have shape-changing features. However, the manufacturing of such objects is still a challenging task. For this, the designing space has to be explored in the initial stages, which is lagging so far. This paper encompasses two recent approaches to explore the conceptual design of 4D printed objects in detail: (a) an application-based modeling and simulation approach for phytomimetic structures and (b) a voxel-based modeling and simulation approach. The voxel-based modeling and simulation approach has the enhanced features for the rapid testing (prior to moving into design procedures) of the given distribution of such 4D printed smart materials (SMs) while checking for behaviors, particularly when these intelligent materials are exposed to a stimulus. The voxel-based modeling and simulation approach is further modified using bi-exponential expressions to encode the time-dependent behavior of the bio-inspired 4D printed materials. The shape-changing materials are inspired from biological objects, such as flowers, which are temperature-sensitive or touch-sensitive, and can be 4D printed in such a way that they are encrypted with a decentralized, anisotropic enlargement feature under a restrained alignment of cellulose fibers as in the case of composite hydrogels. Such plant-inspired architectures can change shapes when immersed in water. This paper also outlines a review of the 4D printing of (a) smart photocurable and biocompatible scaffolds with renewable plant oils, which can be a better alternative to traditional polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) to support human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs), and (b) a biomimetic dual shape-changing tube having applications in biomedical engineering as a bioimplant. The future applications would be based on these smart and intelligent materials; thus, it is important to modify the existing voxel-based modeling and simulation approach and discuss efficient printing methods to fabricate such bio-inspired materials.
