Machine learning techniques for breast cancer computer aided diagnosis using different image modalities: A systematic review.

Real-time three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound (US) has attracted much more attention in medical researches because it provides interactive feedback to help clinicians acquire high-quality images as well as timely spatial information of the scanned area and hence is necessary in intraoperative ultrasound examinations. Plenty of publications have been declared to complete the real-time or near real-time visualization of 3D ultrasound using volumetric probes or the routinely used two-dimensional (2D) probes. So far, a review on how to design an interactive system with appropriate processing algorithms remains missing, resulting in the lack of systematic understanding of the relevant technology. In this article, previous and the latest work on designing a real-time or near real-time 3D ultrasound imaging system are reviewed. Specifically, the data acquisition techniques, reconstruction algorithms, volume rendering methods, and clinical applications are presented. Moreover, the advantages and disadvantages of state-of-the-art approaches are discussed in detail.

A Review on Real-Time 3D Ultrasound Imaging Technology.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death for women, so accurate early detection can help decrease breast cancer mortality rates. Computer-aided detection allows radiologists to detect abnormalities efficiently. Medical images are sources of information relevant to the detection and diagnosis of various diseases and abnormalities. Several modalities allow radiologists to study the internal structure, and these modalities have been met with great interest in several types of research. In some medical fields, each of these modalities is of considerable significance. This study aims at presenting a review that shows the new applications of machine learning and deep learning technology for detecting and classifying breast cancer and provides an overview of progress in this area. This review reflects on the classification of breast cancer utilizing multi-modalities medical imaging. Details are also given on techniques developed to facilitate the classification of tumors, non-tumors, and dense masses in various medical imaging modalities. It first provides an overview of the different approaches to machine learning, then an overview of the different deep learning techniques and specific architectures for the detection and classification of breast cancer. We also provide a brief overview of the different image modalities to give a complete overview of the area. In the same context, this review was performed using a broad variety of research databases as a source of information for access to various field publications. Finally, this review summarizes the future trends and challenges in the classification and detection of breast cancer.

Deep and machine learning techniques for medical imaging-based breast cancer: A comprehensive review

The ultrasound imaging is one of the most common schemes to detect diseases in the clinical practice. There are many advantages of ultrasound imaging such as safety, convenience, and low cost. However, reading ultrasound imaging is not easy. To support the diagnosis of clinicians and reduce the load of doctors, many ultrasound computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems are proposed. In recent years, the success of deep learning in the image classification and segmentation led to more and more scholars realizing the potential of performance improvement brought by utilizing the deep learning in the ultrasound CAD system. This paper summarized the research which focuses on the ultrasound CAD system utilizing machine learning technology in recent years. This study divided the ultrasound CAD system into two categories. One is the traditional ultrasound CAD system which employed the manmade feature and the other is the deep learning ultrasound CAD system. The major feature and the classifier employed by the traditional ultrasound CAD system are introduced. As for the deep learning ultrasound CAD, newest applications are summarized. This paper will be useful for researchers who focus on the ultrasound CAD system.

Machine Learning in Ultrasound Computer-Aided Diagnostic Systems: A Survey.

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women worldwide. Ultrasound imaging is one of the most frequently used diagnostic tools to detect and classify abnormalities of the breast. Recently, computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems using ultrasound images have been developed to help radiologists to increase diagnosis accuracy. However, accurate ultrasound image segmentation remains a challenging problem due to various ultrasound artifacts. In this paper, we investigate approaches developed for breast ultrasound (BUS) image segmentation. In this paper, we reviewed the literature on the segmentation of BUS images according to the techniques adopted, especially over the past 10 years. By dividing into seven classes (i.e., thresholding-based, clustering-based, watershed-based, graph-based, active contour model, Markov random field and neural network), we have introduced corresponding techniques and representative papers accordingly. We have summarized and compared many techniques on BUS image segmentation and found that all these techniques have their own pros and cons. However, BUS image segmentation is still an open and challenging problem due to various ultrasound artifacts introduced in the process of imaging, including high speckle noise, low contrast, blurry boundaries, low signal-to-noise ratio and intensity inhomogeneity To the best of our knowledge, this is the first comprehensive review of the approaches developed for segmentation of BUS images. With most techniques involved, this paper will be useful and helpful for researchers working on segmentation of ultrasound images, and for BUS CAD system developers.
