Behavioral adjustments of African herbivores to predation risk by lions: Spatiotemporal variations influence habitat use
Marion Valeix,Andrew J. Loveridge,Simon Chamaillé-Jammes,Zeke Davidson,Felix Murindagomo,Hervé Fritz,David W. Macdonald +6 more
TL;DR: Results show that all herbivores tend to use more open habitats preferentially when lions are in their vicinity, probably an effective anti-predator behavior against such an ambush predator.
Journal ArticleDOI
The impact of sport-hunting on the population dynamics of an African lion population in a protected area
TL;DR: The impact of sport-hunting beyond the park on the lion population within the park, using radio-telemetry and direct observation, was studied in this article, showing that sport hunters in the safari areas surrounding the park killed 72% of tagged adult males from the study area.
Journal ArticleDOI
Resource variability, aggregation and direct density dependence in an open context: the local regulation of an African elephant population
TL;DR: It is suggested that climate variability strongly affects local elephant population dynamics through changes in surface-water availability, and views that a metapopulation framework should be endorsed for elephant management in open contexts are supported.
Journal ArticleDOI
Does the risk of encountering lions influence African herbivore behaviour at waterholes
Marion Valeix,Marion Valeix,Hervé Fritz,Andrew J. Loveridge,Zeke Davidson,Jane E. Hunt,Felix Murindagomo,David W. Macdonald +7 more
TL;DR: Testing whether the long-term risk of encountering lions and the presence of lions in the vicinity influence the behaviour of large African herbivores at waterholes through avoidance of high-risk areas, increases in group size, changes in temporal niche or changes in the time spent in waterhole areas shows that the preferred prey species for lions avoided risky waterholes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Influence of drought on predation of elephant (Loxodonta africana) calves by lions (Panthera leo) in an African wooded savannah
TL;DR: Data were collected on species killed by lions Panthera leo in Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe between 1998 and 2004, finding elephant calves made up an unusually large proportion of lion prey during the study period, accounting for their high incidence in lion diet.
