Inspired by the biological behavior of domestic cats, the Cat Swarm Optimization (CSO) is a metaheuristic which has been successfully applied to solve several optimization problems. For binary problems, the Boolean Binary Cat Swarm Optimization (BBCSO) presents consistent performance and differentiates itself from most of the other algorithms by not considering the agents as continuous vectors using transfer and discretization functions. In this paper, we present a simplified version of the BBCSO. This new version, named Simplified Binary CSO (SBCSO) which features a new position update rule for the tracing mode, demonstrates improved performance, and reduced computational cost when compared to previous CSO versions, including the BBCSO. Furthermore, the results of the experiments indicate that SBCSO can outperform other well-known algorithms such as the Improved Binary Fish School Search (IBFSS), the Binary Artificial Bee Colony (BABC), the Binary Genetic Algorithm (BGA), and the Modified Binary Particle Swarm Optimization (MBPSO) in several instances of the One Max, 0/1 Knapsack, Multiple 0/1 Knapsack, SubsetSum problem besides Feature Selection problems for eight datasets.

After about 30 years of intense ethanol steam reforming study, which was done over several research works in different countries, there are some consensuses: there are many parameters involved, and many reactions occurred. So, this study aims to show that the results obtained for a better understanding of ethanol reforming which usually are found through complex, time-consuming, and expensive chemical techniques could also be obtained in a statistical study of a factorial model in an easier way. Based on previous studies of different research works, where active phase, temperature, and relative compositions of reactants were established, a statistical study was carried out to evaluate the contribution of the active phase (Ni or Cu or both), O2/C2H5OH ratio, and temperature. It was observed that Ni and Cu favor the reaction course of the ethanol reforming, reducing the occurrence of parallel reactions and byproduct formation. Statistical Approach on Ethanol Reforming

A quadrotor is a flying machine which uses four spinning rotors attached to an airframe. Its flight control and stability are accomplished by controlling the thrust of each rotor. This paper focuses on the study of such machines, starting with a mathematical modeling and the control algorithm implementation. This work addresses the PD and PID methods. After that, the control systems are evaluated by comparing the performance of a classical poles placement method and a bio-inspired optimization approach - the genetic algorithm. The computational results showed that the use of a GA increases the general performance of the model to both controllers, being the PID the most adequate.
