Journal ArticleDOI
Outcome of chronic hepatitis B in Caucasian children during a 20-year observation period
Flavia Bortolotti,Paloma Jara,Carlo Crivellaro,Loreto Hierro,Paolo Cadrobbi,Esteban Frauca,Carmen Camarena,Angela de la Vega,Carmen Diaz,Lorena De Moliner,Franco Noventa +10 more
TL;DR: The large majority of Caucasian children with chronic hepatitis B became asymptomatic carriers of infection with normal alanine amino-transferase during the first 20 years of observation, and a subgroup of patients who experienced reactivation or maintained liver damage after HBeAg clearance seems to be at greater risk for disease progression during adult life.
Journal ArticleDOI
Long term effect of alpha interferon in children with chronic hepatitis B.
Flavia Bortolotti,Paloma Jara,Cristiana Barbera,G V Gregorio,Angela Vegnente,Lucia Zancan,Loreto Hierro,Carlo Crivellaro,G Mieli Vergani,Raffaele Iorio,M Pace,P Con,Angelo Gatta +12 more
TL;DR: After five years' observation, the proportion of treated children with sustained HBeAg clearance comprised an equal number of responders and non-responders and did not differ from that observed in untreated controls, suggesting that IFN simply accelerated a spontaneous event.
Journal ArticleDOI
Progression of fibrosis in chronic hepatitis C in children
Maria Guido,Flavia Bortolotti,G Leo,Paloma Jara,Loreto Hierro,G. Leandro,Cristiana Barbera,Raffaella Giacchino,J. Larrauri,Lucia Zancan,Massimo Rugge +10 more
Journal ArticleDOI
Fibrosis in chronic hepatitis C acquired in infancy: is it only a matter of time?
Maria Guido,Flavia Bortolotti,Gioacchino Leandro,Paloma Jara,Loreto Hierro,J. Larrauri,Cristiana Barbera,Raffaella Giacchino,Lucia Zancan,Fiorella Balli,Carlo Crivellaro,Emilio Cristina,Angela Pucci,Massimo Rugge +13 more
TL;DR: Chronic hepatitis C acquired in childhood is a progressive, slow-moving, fibrotic disease and fibrosis progression inferred on the basis of linear mathematical models should be critically evaluated in the clinical practice.
Journal ArticleDOI
Liver cirrhosis associated with chronic hepatitis B virus infection in childhood.
Flavia Bortolotti,Flavia Bortolotti,R Calzia,R Calzia,Paolo Cadrobbi,Paolo Cadrobbi,Roberta Giacchini,Roberta Giacchini,Barbara Ciravegna,Barbara Ciravegna,M Armigliato,M Armigliato,Rita Piscopo,Rita Piscopo,Giuseppe Realdi,Giuseppe Realdi +15 more
TL;DR: A higher prevalence of delta infection and increased incidence of blood transfusions were observed in patients with cirrhosis, supporting the hypothesis that superinfection with delta or non-A, non-B agents may play a synergistic role.
