Journal ArticleDOI
Quantitative and stoichiometric analysis of the microRNA content of exosomes.
John R. Chevillet,Qing Kang,Ingrid K. Ruf,Hilary A. Briggs,Lucia Vojtech,Sean M. Hughes,Heather H. Cheng,Jason D. Arroyo,Emily K. Meredith,Emily N. Gallichotte,Era L. Pogosova-Agadjanyan,Colm Morrissey,Derek L. Stirewalt,Florian Hladik,Evan Y. Yu,Celestia S. Higano,Muneesh Tewari +16 more
TL;DR: It is shown here that most exosomes derived from standard preparations do not harbor many copies of miRNA molecules, and are, therefore, individually unlikely to be functional as vehicles for miRNA-based communication.
Journal ArticleDOI
Initial Events in Establishing Vaginal Entry and Infection by Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type-1
Florian Hladik,Florian Hladik,Polachai Sakchalathorn,Lamar Ballweber,Gretchen M. Lentz,Michael F. Fialkow,David A. Eschenbach,M. Juliana McElrath +7 more
TL;DR: Light is shed on the very earliest steps of mucosal HIV infection in vivo and may guide the design of effective strategies to block local transmission and prevent HIV-1 spread.
Journal ArticleDOI
Setting the stage: host invasion by HIV.
TL;DR: The current concepts of the immediate events that follow viral exposure at genital mucosal sites where most documented transmissions occur are reviewed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Exosomes in human semen carry a distinctive repertoire of small non-coding RNAs with potential regulatory functions
Lucia Vojtech,Sangsoon Woo,Sean M. Hughes,Claire N. Levy,Lamar Ballweber,Renan Sauteraud,Johanna Strobl,Katharine Westerberg,Raphael Gottardo,Muneesh Tewari,Florian Hladik +10 more
TL;DR: It is found that seminal exosome (SE) preparations contain a substantial amount of RNA from 20 to 100 nucleotides (nts) in length, which could potentially deliver regulatory signals to the recipient mucosa via transfer of small RNA molecules.
Journal ArticleDOI
Persistence of HIV-1 receptor–positive cells after HSV-2 reactivation is a potential mechanism for increased HIV-1 acquisition
Jia Zhu,Florian Hladik,Florian Hladik,Amanda Woodward,Amanda Woodward,Alexis Klock,Alexis Klock,Tao Peng,Tao Peng,Christine Johnston,Christine Johnston,Michael L. Remington,Amalia Magaret,Amalia Magaret,David M. Koelle,David M. Koelle,Anna Wald,Lawrence Corey +17 more
TL;DR: In situ analysis of the cellular infiltrate from sequential biopsies of HSV-2 lesions from patients on and off antiviral therapy found the persistence and enrichment of HIV receptor–positive inflammatory cells in the genitalia help explain the inability of anti–HSV- 2 therapy to reduce HIV acquisition.
