Journal ArticleDOI
Uric acid and survival in chronic heart failure: Validation and application in metabolic, functional, and hemodynamic staging
Stefan D. Anker,Wolfram Doehner,Mathias Rauchhaus,Rakesh Sharma,Darrel P. Francis,Christoph Knosalla,Constantinos H. Davos,Mariantonietta Cicoira,Waqar Shamim,Michel Kemp,Robert Segal,Karl Josef Osterziel,Francisco Leyva,Roland Hetzer,Piotr Ponikowski,Andrew J.S. Coats +15 more
TL;DR: High serum UA levels are a strong, independent marker of impaired prognosis in patients with moderate to severe CHF and the relationship between serum UA and survival in CHF is graded.
Journal ArticleDOI
Insulin Resistance in Chronic Heart Failure: Relation to Severity and Etiology of Heart Failure
Jonathan W. Swan,Stefan D. Anker,Christopher Walton,I F Godsland,Andrew L. Clark,Francisco Leyva,John C. Stevenson,Andrew J.S. Coats +7 more
TL;DR: CHF is associated with marked insulin resistance, characterized by both fasting and stimulated hyperinsulinemia, but this is not directly mediated through ventricular dysfunction or increased catecholamine levels.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Pathophysiology of Heart Failure With Normal Ejection Fraction: Exercise Echocardiography Reveals Complex Abnormalities of Both Systolic and Diastolic Ventricular Function Involving Torsion, Untwist, and Longitudinal Motion
Y. T. Tan,F. Wenzelburger,Eveline Lee,G. Heatlie,Francisco Leyva,Kiran Patel,Michael P. Frenneaux,John E. Sanderson +7 more
TL;DR: In HFNEF there are widespread abnormalities of both systolic and diastolic function that become more apparent on exercise, andHFNEF is not an isolated disorder of diastole.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cytokines and neurohormones relating to body composition alterations in the wasting syndrome of chronic heart failure.
Stefan D. Anker,Piotr Ponikowski,Andrew L. Clark,Francisco Leyva,Mathias Rauchhaus,Michael Kemp,Mauro M. Teixeira,Paul G. Hellewell,James Hooper,P. A. Poole-Wilson,Andrew J.S. Coats +10 more
TL;DR: The levels of catabolic hormones and cytokines correlated significantly with reduced muscle and fat tissue content and reduced bone mass and peripheral loss of muscle tissue is a general finding in chronic heart failure.
Journal ArticleDOI
Serum uric acid as an index of impaired oxidative metabolism in chronic heart failure
Francisco Leyva,Stefan D. Anker,Stefan D. Anker,Jonathan W. Swan,Ian F. Godsland,Callum S. Wingrove,T. P. Chua,John C. Stevenson,Andrew J.S. Coats +8 more
TL;DR: There is an inverse relationship between serum uric acid concentrations and measures of functional capacity in patients with cardiac failure, which suggests that in chronic heart failure, serum uring acid concentrations reflect an impairment of oxidative metabolism.
