Supercapacitors, also called ultracapacitors or electrochemical capacitors, store electrical charge on high-surface-area conducting materials. Their widespread use is limited by their low energy storage density and relatively high effective series resistance. Using chemical activation of exfoliated graphite oxide, we synthesized a porous carbon with a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area of up to 3100 square meters per gram, a high electrical conductivity, and a low oxygen and hydrogen content. This sp 2 -bonded carbon has a continuous three-dimensional network of highly curved, atom-thick walls that form primarily 0.6- to 5-nanometer-width pores. Two-electrode supercapacitor cells constructed with this carbon yielded high values of gravimetric capacitance and energy density with organic and ionic liquid electrolytes. The processes used to make this carbon are readily scalable to industrial levels.

Carbon properties and their role in supercapacitors

Microporous activated carbons were prepared from date pits using thermal activation with CO2 or steam. The adsorbents were characterized by N2 and CO2 adsorption at 77 K and 273K, respectively. The H2 adsorption was measured at 298K and 100 bar using a volumetric equipment. To increase the hydrogen storage, activated carbons are doped by metals. The results show that the H 2 adsorption capacity is influenced by the size and volume of micropores in the activated carbon adsorbent. A relationship between hydrogen adsorption capacity calculated using Langmuir isotherm and the volume of narrow micropores deduced from the CO2 adsorption isotherm at 273 K was found. A correlation was also found between both micropore volumes and the amount of hydrogen adsorbed at 298 K and 100 bar. Additionally, vanadium doping of activated carbons could positively influence hydrogen adsorption.

The adsorption of N2 and CO2 on PAN carbons

Abstract The physicochemical characterization of titania nanoreservoirs impregnated with four anticonvulsants and a reference is presented. The homogeneous stabilization of the compounds is investigated upon the structures observed for the samples. Results show the existence and atomic concentration of the characteristic elements present in the anticonvulsants, corroborating the proper stabilization into the matrix. Evaluations in the titanium 2p core level indicate there is no physicochemical interaction between the drugs and the oxide matrix, which only acts as a reservoir. Further, the presence of titanium ions with charges 4+ and 3+, as well as the peaks observed for the oxygen 1 s orbital, confirm the formation of oxygen deficiencies and lattice oxygen coordination, which translate into the generation of punctual defects, an important characteristic for nanostructured reservoirs. Consequently, the titania can be used as an anticonvulsant delivery device.
