Biological Synthesis of Nanoparticles from Plants and Microorganisms

Nanotechnology is the creation, manipulation and use of materials at the nanometre size scale (1 to 100 nm). At this size scale there are significant differences in many material properties that are normally not seen in the same materials at larger scales. Although nanoscale materials can be produced using a variety of traditional physical and chemical processes, it is now possible to biologically synthesize materials via environment-friendly green chemistry based techniques. In recent years, the convergence between nanotechnology and biology has created the new field of nanobiotechnology that incorporates the use of biological entities such as actinomycetes algae, bacteria, fungi, viruses, yeasts, and plants in a number of biochemical and biophysical processes. The biological synthesis via nanobiotechnology processes have a significant potential to boost nanoparticles production without the use of harsh, toxic, and expensive chemicals commonly used in conventional physical and chemical processes. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of recent trends in synthesizing nanoparticles via biological entities and their potential applications.

Green Synthesis of Metallic Nanoparticles via Biological Entities

Development of reliable and eco-accommodating methods for the synthesis of nanoparticles is a vital step in the field of nanotechnology. Silver nanoparticles are important because of their exceptional chemical, physical, and biological properties, and hence applications. In the last decade, numerous efforts were made to develop green methods of synthesis to avoid the hazardous byproducts. This review describes the methods of green synthesis for Ag-NPs and their numerous applications. It also describes the comparison of efficient synthesis methods via green routes over physical and chemical methods, which provide strong evidence for the selection of suitable method for the synthesis of Ag-NPs.

A review on green synthesis of silver nanoparticles and their applications

The green synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs) using living cells is a promising and novelty tool in bionanotechnology. Chemical and physical methods are used to synthesize NPs; however, biological methods are preferred due to its eco-friendly, clean, safe, cost-effective, easy, and effective sources for high productivity and purity. High pressure or temperature is not required for the green synthesis of NPs, and the use of toxic and hazardous substances and the addition of external reducing, stabilizing, or capping agents are avoided. Intra- or extracellular biosynthesis of NPs can be achieved by numerous biological entities including bacteria, fungi, yeast, algae, actinomycetes, and plant extracts. Recently, numerous methods are used to increase the productivity of nanoparticles with variable size, shape, and stability. The different mechanical, optical, magnetic, and chemical properties of NPs have been related to their shape, size, surface charge, and surface area. Detection and characterization of biosynthesized NPs are conducted using different techniques such as UV-vis spectroscopy, FT-IR, TEM, SEM, AFM, DLS, XRD, zeta potential analyses, etc. NPs synthesized by the green approach can be incorporated into different biotechnological fields as antimicrobial, antitumor, and antioxidant agents; as a control for phytopathogens; and as bioremediative factors, and they are also used in the food and textile industries, in smart agriculture, and in wastewater treatment. This review will address biological entities that can be used for the green synthesis of NPs and their prospects for biotechnological applications.

Green Synthesis of Metallic Nanoparticles and Their Prospective Biotechnological Applications: an Overview

Metal nanoparticles have received great attention from researchers across the world because of a plethora of applications in agriculture and the biomedical field as antioxidants and antimicrobial compounds. Over the past few years, green nanotechnology has emerged as a significant approach for the synthesis and fabrication of metal nanoparticles. This green route employs various reducing and stabilizing agents from biological resources for the synthesis of nanoparticles. The present article aims to review the progress made in recent years on nanoparticle biosynthesis by microbes. These microbial resources include bacteria, fungi, yeast, algae and viruses. This review mainly focuses on the biosynthesis of the most commonly studied metal and metal salt nanoparticles such as silver, gold, platinum, palladium, copper, cadmium, titanium oxide, zinc oxide and cadmium sulphide. These nanoparticles can be used in pharmaceutical products as antimicrobial and anti-biofilm agents, targeted delivery of anticancer drugs, water electrolysis, waste water treatment, biosensors, biocatalysis, crop protection against pathogens, degradation of dyes etc. This review will discuss in detail various microbial modes of nanoparticles synthesis and the mechanism of their synthesis by various bioreducing agents such as enzymes, peptides, proteins, electron shuttle quinones and exopolysaccharides. A thorough understanding of the molecular mechanism of biosynthesis is the need of the hour to develop a technology for large scale production of bio-mediated nanoparticles. The present review also discusses the advantages of various microbial approaches in nanoparticles synthesis and lacuna involved in such processes. This review also highlights the recent milestones achieved on large scale production and future perspectives of nanoparticles.

A review on the biosynthesis of metal and metal salt nanoparticles by microbes

The study was planned to screen the marine actinobacterial extract for the protease inhibitor activity and its anti- Pf activity under in vitro and in vivo conditions. Out of 100 isolates, only 3 isolates exhibited moderate to high protease inhibitor activities on trypsin, chymotrypsin and proteinase K. Based on protease inhibitor activity 3 isolates were chosen for further studies. The potential isolate was characterized by polyphasic approach and identified as Streptomyces sp LK3 (JF710608). The lead compound was identified as peptide from Streptomyces sp LK3. The double-reciprocal plot displayed inhibition mode is non-competitive and it confirms the irreversible nature of protease inhibitor. The peptide from Streptomyces sp LK3 extract showed significant anti plasmodial activity (IC50: 25.78 µg/ml). In in vivo model, the highest level of parasitemia suppression (≈45%) was observed in 600 mg/kg of the peptide. These analyses revealed no significant changes were observed in the spleen and liver tissue during 8 dpi. The results confirmed up-regulation of TGF-β and down regulation of TNF-α in tissue and serum level in PbA infected peptide treated mice compared to PbA infection. The results obtained infer that the peptide possesses anti- Pf activity activity. It suggests that the extracts have novel metabolites and could be considered as a potential source for drug development.

Protease inhibitors from marine actinobacteria as a potential source for antimalarial compound.

In the present study, the marine actinobacteria mediated biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNps) was achieved using Streptomyces sp LK3. The synthesized AgNps showed the characteristic absorption spectra in UV-vis at 420 nm, which confirmed the presence of nanoparticles. XRD analysis showed intense peaks at 2θ values of 27.51°, 31.87°, 45.57°, 56.56°, 66.26°, and 75.25° corresponding to (210), (113), (124), (240), (226), and (300) Bragg's reflection based on the fcc structure of AgNps. The FTIR spectra exhibited prominent peaks at 3,417 cm(-1) (OH stretching due to alcoholic group) and 1,578 cm(-1) (C=C ring stretching). TEM micrograph showed that the synthesized AgNps were spherical in shape with an average size of 5 nm. Surface morphology and topographical structure of the synthesized AgNps were dignified by AFM. The synthesized AgNps showed significant acaricidal activity against Rhipicephalus microplus and Haemaphysalis bispinosa with LC50 values of 16.10 and 16.45 mg/L, respectively. Our results clearly indicate that AgNps could provide a safer alternative to conventional acaricidal agents in the form of a topical antiparasitic formulation. The present study aimed to develop a novel, cost-effective, eco-friendly actinobacteria mediated synthesis of AgNps and its antiparasitic activity.

Streptomyces sp. LK3 mediated synthesis of silver nanoparticles and its biomedical application

The aim of the study was to synthesize silver nanoparticles by using filamentous fungus Penicillium sp. The fungal culture was isolated from the soil samples collected from agriculture fields in Vellore district, Tamil Nadu, India. The purified fungal isolates were inoculated in minimal medium and incubated at room temperature for three days. For the synthesis of silver nanoparticles, 50 ml of cell filtrate was mixed with equal volume of 1mM silver nitrate [AgNO3 (1 mM)] and agitated at room temperature in dark. The synthesis of silver nanoparticles was investigated by UV-Vis spectroscopy, Atomic force microscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopic analysis. Results indicate the synthesis of silver nanoparticles in the reaction mixture. Mechanism of silver nanoparticles synthesis was determined by nitrate reduction test.

Extracellular biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles using the filamentous fungus penicillium sp

The knowledge of traditional medicine and medicinal plants and their study of scientific chemical principles may lead to the discovery of newer and cheaper drugs. Lantana camara is well known to cure several diseases and used in various folk medicinal preparations. In last few decades, scientist and researchers around the globe have elaborately studied the chemical composition of whole plant of L. camara as well as biological pharmacological activities. These studies established the therapeutic potential of Lantana camara in modern medicines and a possible candidate for the drug discovery. The present review gives a bird's eye view on ethnobotany, phytochemistry, pharmacology and toxicology of L. camara.

A Review on Medicinal Properties of Lantana camara Linn.

Calotropis gigantea is a common wasteland weed and known for various medicinal properties. The aim of the present study was to screen leaves of Calotropis gigantea for the antimicrobial activity against clinical isolates of bacteria. The aqueous extract of the C. gigantea was studied for its antagonistic activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Bacillus cereus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Micrococcus luteus and Klebsiella pneumoniae. In vitro antimicrobial activity was performed by well diffusion method in MH agar. The extract showed significant effect on the tested organisms. The extract showed maximum zone of inhibition against E. coli (17.6±1.15), whereas, lowest against K. pneumoniae (12.6±1.52). Crude extract showed maximum relative percentage inhibition against B. cereus (188.52 %) and lowest relative percentage inhibition against M. luteus (24.92 %). Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) was measured by modified agar well diffusion method. Extract showed 50, 25, 6.25, 3.1, 1.5 and 12.5 mg/ml MIC values for S. aureus, K. pneumoniae, B. subtilis, P. aeruginosa, M. luteus and E. coli, respectively.
