Journal ArticleDOI
Antibiotic resistance of E. coli in sewage and sludge.
Franz F. Reinthaler,J. Posch,Gebhard Feierl,Gilda Wüst,Doris Haas,Gerald Ruckenbauer,Franz Mascher,Egon Marth +7 more
TL;DR: The highest resistance rates were found in E. coli strains of a sewage treatment plant which treats not only municipal sewage but also sewage from a hospital, and thus sewage treatment processes contribute to the dissemination of resistant bacteria in the environment.
Journal ArticleDOI
Species-specific identification of campylobacters by partial 16S rRNA gene sequencing.
Gregor Gorkiewicz,Gebhard Feierl,Caroline Schober,Franz Dieber,Josef Köfer,Rudolf Zechner,Ellen L. Zechner +6 more
TL;DR: 16S rDNA sequence analysis is recommended as an effective, rapid procedure for the specific identification of campylobacters and a simple protocol based on the analysis of these sequence patterns was developed, which enabled the unambiguous identification of the majority of Campylobacter species.
Journal ArticleDOI
Contaminated Handwashing Sinks as the Source of a Clonal Outbreak of KPC-2-Producing Klebsiella oxytoca on a Hematology Ward
Eva Leitner,Gernot Zarfel,Josefa Luxner,Kathrin A. T. Herzog,Shiva Pekard-Amenitsch,Martin Hoenigl,Thomas Valentin,Gebhard Feierl,Andrea J. Grisold,Christoph Högenauer,Heinz Sill,Robert Krause,Ines Zollner-Schwetz +12 more
TL;DR: A clonal outbreak caused by KPC-2-producing K. oxytoca is described, and handwashing sinks were a possible reservoir.
Journal ArticleDOI
ESBL-producing E. coli in Austrian sewage sludge.
Franz F. Reinthaler,Gebhard Feierl,Herbert Galler,Doris Haas,Eva Leitner,Franz Mascher,Angelika Melkes,J. Posch,Ingrid Winter,Gernot Zarfel,Egon Marth +10 more
TL;DR: The aim of this study was to investigate the degree of contamination of sewage sludge with ESBL-producing Escherichia coli strains and the effectiveness of different sludge treatment methods.
Journal ArticleDOI
Use of automated repetitive-sequence-based PCR for rapid laboratory confirmation of nosocomial outbreaks.
Andrea J. Grisold,Gernot Zarfel,Volker Strenger,Gebhard Feierl,Eva Leitner,Lilian Masoud,Martin Hoenigl,Reinhard B. Raggam,V. Dosch,Egon Marth +9 more
TL;DR: Automated rep-PCR assays on the DiversiLab system were used for MRSA, A. baumannii and for the first time ESBL-producing Klebsiella spp.
