Journal ArticleDOI
Problems of experimental trials of therapy in multiple sclerosis: report by the panel on the evaluation of experimental trials of therapy in multiple sclerosis.
George A. Schumacher,Gilbert Beebe,Robert F. Kibler,Leonard T. Kurland,John F. Kurtzke,Fletcher McDowell,Benedict Nagler,William A. Sibley,Wallace W. Tourtellotte,Thomas L. Willmon +9 more
TL;DR: Since its etiology and pathogenesis have eluded detection, it is not surprising that therapeutic attempts have been empiric and often unscientific.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cooperative study in the evaluation of therapy in multiple sclerosis; ACTH vs placebo in acute exacerbations
Augustus S. Rose,Jan W. Kuzma,John F. Kurtzke,William A. Sibley,Wallace W. Tourtellotte,Wilfrid J. Dixon,Joseph M. Foley,Norman Geschwind,Charles A. Kane,Roland P. Mackay,Fletcher McDowell,Labe C. Scheinberg,George A. Schumacher,Philip T. White +13 more
TL;DR: This preliminary report, based on observations of the first 135 cases entered, demonstrates that adequate randomization of patients can be obtained in this disease and describes means for reasonably accurate evaluation of the many clinical changes seen in multiple sclerosis patients under treatment.
Journal ArticleDOI
Critique of experimental trials of therapy in multiple sclerosis.
TL;DR: No extant protocol for an experimental trial of therapy in multiple sclerosis provides a reliable tool for the determination of therapeutic efficacy, and suggestions are made for conducting trials of empiric methods along simpler lines with high powers of resolution.
Journal ArticleDOI
Virus antibodies and multiple sclerosis.
John L. Sever,John F. Kurtzke,Milton Alter,George A. Schumacher,Mary R. Gilkeson,Jonas H. Ellenberg,Jacob A. Brody +6 more
TL;DR: Antibody levels for respiratory syncytial virus, adenovirus, mumps, and varicella were increased among multiple sclerosis patients in individual groups, but this was not consistent for all three groups.
Journal ArticleDOI
Microsurgery as an aid to middle cerebral artery endarterectomy.
Julius H. Jacobson,Lester J. Wallman,George A. Schumacher,Martin Flanagan,Ernesto L. Suarez,R. M. Peardon Donaghy +5 more
TL;DR: In this article, instrumentation and technique for microsurgical reconstruction of small arteries are described, and two cases are reported in each of which an obstruction was removed from the middle cerebral artery for early hemiplegia.
