Self-assembly is the autonomous organization of components into patterns or structures without human intervention. Self-assembling processes are common throughout nature and technology. They involve components from the molecular (crystals) to the planetary (weather systems) scale and many different kinds of interactions. The concept of self-assembly is used increasingly in many disciplines, with a different flavor and emphasis in each.

Self-assembly at all scales.

Recent developments have greatly improved the sensitivity of optical sensors based on metal nanoparticle arrays and single nanoparticles. We introduce the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) sensor and describe how its exquisite sensitivity to size, shape and environment can be harnessed to detect molecular binding events and changes in molecular conformation. We then describe recent progress in three areas representing the most significant challenges: pushing sensitivity towards the single-molecule detection limit, combining LSPR with complementary molecular identification techniques such as surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, and practical development of sensors and instrumentation for routine use and high-throughput detection. This review highlights several exceptionally promising research directions and discusses how diverse applications of plasmonic nanoparticles can be integrated in the near future.

Biosensing with plasmonic nanosensors

A Cs monolayer on a Ru(0001) substrate emits electrons when exposed to O2 molecules. As shown previously, this ‘exoelectron’ emission is essentially confined to the late stages of oxidation where a metastable O species forms on top of the overlayer. Detailed analysis of the kinetics reveals that electron emission is coupled to dissociation of this species which proceeds with an activation energy of about 1 eV. The exoemission active sites are blocked by the chemisorbed oxygen atoms formed, but may be partly restored through another thermally activated process (associated with an activation energy of about 1.4 eV) presumably comprising rearrangement of the O atoms below the Cs overlayer.

Ejection of O− ions by interaction of O2 with Ru(0001) covered with submonolayers of Cs

Energy distribution measurements of field-emitted electrons reveal a free-electron-type behavior for clean Ir(100) and (110) surfaces. Adsorption of CO on Ir(100) causes the appearance of a structure at 0.6 eV below the Fermi level ${E}_{\mathrm{F}}$ which is identified with a chemisorption level created by "back donation" of metallic $d$ electrons into the CO $2{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{*}$ level. Adsorption of atomic oxygen on Ir(100) and (110) leads to the formation of a maximum at 1.0 eV below ${E}_{\mathrm{F}}$ which is ascribed to a state derived from one of the O $2p$ levels.
